Last Sunday, the work of REDBASE artist @cheolyuk transformed the Utzon Room at the @sydneyoperahouse as part of Mahk Making Spaces, a multi-artform performance presented by the School of Arts, Western Sydney University @crossman_bruce_composer
The evening drew on mahk, the Korean aesthetic defined by renowned architect Byoung Cho, which finds sincerity and immediacy in things that are rough, unrefined and ordinary. Cheolyu Kim’s painting Space 7 #157, alongside Richard Wu’s Waterfall Within, was the creative spark for the entire program. His artworks were woven through films, music, and poetry.
Our thanks to Professor Bruce Crossman and the entire School of Arts team at Western Sydney University for bringing this ambitious project to life taken in Sydney Opera House by @redbaseau

Jin Sha’s “The Blue Veil” exhibition will extend until October 10

In the exhibition, his painting “Conversation with Giovanni Bellini” has been recreated through meticulous bain (汴绣) embroidery over 3 years in collaboration with a master embroider. The technique is a traditional Song Dynasty art that has been passed down as one of the National Intangible Cultural Heritages. The style features rigorous silk thread stitching and exquisite craftmanship, making them rare treasures in the world of embroidery art.

Jin Sha references the iconic oil painting Giovanni Bellini, “Portrait of Doge Leonardo Loredan” (1501) as part of his Salute to Masters series. It takes on a double meaning, referencing both the high art of the Renaissance and Song Dynasty traditional master technique. He’s shown in three-quarter view against a blue ground, behind a wooden ledge, wearing the corno ducale — the stiff horned cap of the office — and a coat of gold-and-silver-threaded brocade. It is one of the most celebrated state portraits in Western art, and its subject is the rendering of fabric and rank.

Magritte’s pipe is suspended in front of the empty robes. The Ceci n’est pas une pipe logic lands directly on a state portrait: what appears on the surface is not necessarily what is there. taken in Redbase Art by @redbaseau

REDBASE returned to Sydney Contemporary with works by Jin Sha, Li Hongbo, Tian Longyu, Liao Jianhua, Liu Xi, Cheolyu Kim and Stephan Kaluza.

Across painting, ceramics, paper sculpture and mixed media, the presentation brought together different approaches to image, material, bodily experience and historical memory. Some works reconsidered traditional imagery and art-historical references, while others explored the boundaries between object, surface and space.

Within the setting of Sydney Contemporary, the booth became a site of encounter between artists, viewers and different cultural contexts, opening a space for cross-cultural dialogue within Sydney’s contemporary art ecology.

@lihongboart is among the best-known paper sculptors working today. Drawing on the honeycomb "paper-gourd" techniques of Chinese folk toys, he glues thousands of sheets into dense blocks and carves them into forms of timber and steel - that can be pulled and reshaped, cascading like an accordion. 💯📍 One of my favourites at the 2026 Sydney art fair, presented by the always great and ambitious @redbaseau 🫶 taken in Sydney, Australia by @redbaseau

Jin Sha: The Blue Veil
Opening Saturday 29 August, 5-7PM

REDBASE Art Sydney is proud to present our second solo exhibition with renowned gongbi artist Jin Sha. The exhibition coincides with our presentation of Jin Sha’s work at @sydneycontemporary

In “The Blue Veil”, Jin Sha paints the moment before the curtain opens, or just after it has begun to close. Working in gongbi — the meticulous fine-brush silk painting tradition — he quietly empties figures out of Renaissance masterpieces. He leaves only garments and accessories floating in what he calls this his liubai, the intended blank through which the viewer enters the work

It features paintings made specifically for Sydney, and it is the first time an Australian image has entered Jin Sha’s tribute to the masters. He has placed Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly — known as Australia’s own faceless figure, disguised in a helmet that has haunted the Australian imagination — into dialogue with Renaissance masters. In doing so, he unravels a greater, more nuanced conversation on the stretch of time and art history. This act of recontextualising art history into the Chinese context and tradition through gongbi complicates Australian mythmaking in a playful, yet inexplicable way

“Eastern Abstraction” — group exhibition at @redbaseau is open until August 19

Featuring Tian Longyu, Paul Bai, Sungmin Park, Li Kezheng, and Tifani Anggun

Paul Bai, working in Brisbane since 1988, builds paintings whose frames sit askew and ill-fitting, their colours suspended between sunrise and sunset as the in-between of the first-generation migrant is made spatial.

Featured work “Study of Horizon No.8”, acrylic on canvas and wood, 70cm x 66cm, 2026 ▪️ taken in Redbase Art by @redbaseau

South Korean artist Sungmin Park renders ceramic tiles with such hyperreal precision that it flows into abstraction, while Indonesian artist Tifani Anggun layers liquid latex into iridescent surfaces, where memory and impermanence pool at the threshold of Balinese cosmology and contemporary Indonesia taken in Redbase Art by @redbaseau
