Jessica is a big "Game of Thrones" fan. When she had a bone tumor removed from her ankle, she waited for the scar to heal and knew what would make the perfect tattoo.

“Like they say in the show, ‘What do we say, to the god of death?’ And she says, ‘Not Today.’ So, that was a very meaningful tattoo.”

Jessica says the tattoo reminds her that she came out on the other side of an ordeal. That other side of her surgery also has her donating blood to "pay it forward."

She said, "I've had so many people help me with my illnesses and injuries, surgeries that I've had."

We met Jessica last month after she made a Power Red donation at @prestonandsteveshow blood drive in Oaks.

“I have had friends who have had illnesses, cancer, different things and they’ve always been very grateful for people who have donated blood, so it inspired me to also donate blood to help others,” she said.

What's her favorite thing about donating?

“Getting the email to tell me where my blood's going.," she said. “It’s nice to know oh, it went here to the kids' hospital, it went here to this place, and so that's a pretty cool part of it.”

The Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood shortage and is now days away from a blood crisis! Donations are needed now to help ensure blood is available when patients need it.

Almost four years into his career, Philly Police Officer Ashley Hoggard got shot in the line of duty in 2009. Blood transfusions helped save his life.

“The night I got shot, I needed six pints of blood just to stay alive. It came from six different strangers. Six people that I never met. Six people that I can’t even say thank you to. They saved my life," he said.

Because Ashley knows that it's the blood already on a hospital's shelf that saves lives like his in an emergency, he donates regularly to give back and help others.

What if you showed up to donate blood and learned that your all-time favorite actor - the one whose most famous character is tattooed on your leg - is there too?

That happened when self-described "Breaking Bad" super fan Marcy came out to give blood at Pacifico Ford in Southwest Philly last Monday.

She couldn't believe it when someone told her Bryan Cranston was also there donating. Marcy showed him the tattoo of his face as Walter White on her thigh. He joked, “I’ve got a tattoo of you!” And they both laughed.

He was “so down to earth and normal and nice,” she said. "It’s strange that everything aligned." Marcy said he's the only celebrity she's ever wanted to meet and it's something she will never forget.

Nearly 25 years ago, Marcy nearly died when she lost too much blood giving birth to her daughter. Platelet transfusions helped saved her life. As soon as she recovered, she became a blood donor.

The Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage as the blood supply fell nearly 25% in June. Donations are needed ASAP to help ensure patients get the help they need.

It's #NationalTattooDay - and we're reminding everyone that having ink doesn't stop you from donating blood.

Take it from Isabella, who's a genetic analyst in our National Molecular Lab. She has 9 tattoos total, including one of a lamppost - with a good story behind it.

Broad Street in Philadelphia is lined with lampposts. So when Isabella tackled the 10-mile Broad Street Run, she motivated herself by thinking, "Just get to the next lamppost."

She calls it a good metaphor for life, and the reminder is inked onto her forearm.

Isabella showed us her tattoos when she gave blood at last week's Staff Donor Day blood drive.

“The more that I work here, the more that I realize that it really is a need for a lot of folks, and if it’s something that I can help with, by giving 7 minutes of my time, I’m happy to do that,” she said.

15-year-old Cameron is a diehard Philly sports fan who loves playing football, basketball and running track. But pain from sickle cell disease can knock him out of his much loved activities.

“I miss out on a lot of things I need to do,” he said. But Cameron wants you to know there's a way you can help. “Donating blood is important. It helps people with sickle cell."

Proving that a sickle cell crisis can happen at any time, Cameron was hospitalized last year during a blood drive that his mom Qamra was helping organize with Jack & Jill of America.

Cameron’s dad Maurice gave blood at the drive and had a message for people who are thinking about donating but haven’t done it yet.

“Do it as soon as possible. You never know how your donation may help somebody else in need, especially kids with sickle cell.”

Sickle cell warriors across the country depend on blood transfusions to help manage their symptoms and improve health outcomes. Your donation makes a difference.
