Badwater 135 — the journey is about to begin..

“Been there, done that” is a saying I generally have the privilege of saying.. Usually, I have some relation to the task or experience at hand. This time it’s no where near my vocabulary.. This is a first for me. I’m about to walk into Satan’s House and ask him if I can use his Treadmill for 30-35+ hours 😈 🔥 🏃🏻‍♂️

I’ve had some sauna training, I know how heat can leave you daze and confused, by simply sitting in the extreme temperature. Now, I’m going to traverse Death Valley Natty Park from Badwater Basin thru Lone Pine and up to Mt. Whitney. Excuse me, Beezelbub, can you increase the incline to 7-8% and then 10% for the final 13 miles up to Mt. Whitney?

I’ve had several head scratching moments of wondering how this will get done… In the last 48 hours I’ve already figured it out. I will achieve this goal with the help with a few good friends. Brian, Tim & Connor will be crewing me at mile 0 throughout the 135 mile journey. It’s not going to be done singularly like most Ultras can be achieved.

They have my life 100% in their hands and I am 100% confident to say, I’m going to be alright. I had a thought a couple weeks ago, that this is like being at my “life funeral” and I selected 3 people who are capable, confident, life seekers to be my living “pallbearers”. These three have been with me through hard and joyful moments. We will weather this challenge step by step.

I’m not one to “publicly post” before setting out for a big objective, but I’m honestly confident in my crew and my headstrong, get shit done mindset. Thanks Fellas for accepting my ask for help and coming out ready to give what you got.

Spartathlon 2025, the 153 mile foot race following in Pheiddippes footsteps has come and gone! Another start another finish (2 for 2), while there are many things to say about the journey from Athens to Sparta on foot this is an appreciation post not a race recap.

I’d like to thank Nancy Readinger, (in addition to creating & birthing me) & Jean Octavio Popescu (@jeanpopescus) for crewing me in Greece to support me mile by mile and hour by hour. They both took time from their busy lives to come to Greece and crew me in a support car. While ultra marathoning is rather uneventful, I’d even say worlds worst parade, seeing them every 5 - 12 miles was a highlight of the journey. I was able to mentally click off the relatively short distances between seeing them all the way to Sparta. Additional benefits.. drinking a beer (@ mile 60 & 140), eating Soulvaki and have a 42 birthday cake which I declined to eat at the time (my sincerest apologies, my stomach wasn’t into it). Running the last 50 meters with my mom, might be my one of my favorite moments of my adult life.. Once in a lifetime moments — that somehow I rework to have do-overs and re-runs of joyous moments — (o_O)

Being crew is a thankless endeavor (in the moment) and I am eternally grateful I had their support.

A couple other shout outs:
A huge thank you to Nathan Flear (@nathanflear) my friend (first) and running coach. He was able to shepherd me and my style of running into a 7-9 month-ish training plan. I haven’t had structure in running since my first training plan for my first marathon back in Aug 2006. His love (and prowess) of running and Spartathlon specifically, is what drew me to him to entrust him with my daily activity. Basically, 5 out of 7 days a week I was doing what Mr. Flear instructed me to do. I’m grateful for his guidance and thankful for his support. Special shout out to his wife & 3 children: Tori, Skye, Summer & Jackson - We all met on an adventure down to The Copper Canyon in Feb of 2023. Even know we are on different continents, the Flears will always be near and dear to me!

Other shout outs; cheers to Camp Pink Lightning, my running family from all over the world…. [Cont below] by @reddog_roams

Growing up, Andrew “Reddog” Readinger didn’t really like running. He played lots of team sports, but running was hard and not really his favorite thing to do. High school and college saw him excel in lifting 12 oz weights. But when his stepmother was diagnosed with breast cancer after being in remission for several years, he ended up coming home from college on the weekends and got out of regularly drinking.

What would become his inspiration, his Uncle Craig, was in the 50 states marathon club and marathon maniacs and was doing them all over the country. Knowing firsthand about marathons and what the body was capable of, even at the ripe age of 55, Reddog was super intrigued by the life his uncle was living.

In 2004, Reddog ran his hometown half marathon (Cowtown Half Marathon) on a dare from a college roommate and then again in 2005. When stepmother passed away in 2006, he dedicated his first full marathon to her in Aug of that year. After that the hook was set.

In 2007 he managed to get to the finish line of 14 marathons and ran his first ultras (a 50k & a 6 hour). In 2008 he ended up with 17 marathons+ (3 were 50k’s), then in 2009 he ended up with 19 marathons and beyond, three were 50 milers that year. If you’re following along you know how this story progresses…. Continued in comments

It’s been a long while since a post but felt like sharing an update. I’m back in southern cal, working at a desk and planning for my upcoming Nepal expedition (I mean sounds cooler than trip) I’ll be running the Orcas Island 100 by @rainshadowrunning at the end of the month so first things first but excited for 2024.

This photo was taken on a recent trip to Baja, where we pulled off to watch the #sunset 🌅 Highly recommend taking a drive south of the border if you get the chance! #letsgo #bajaapprecationpost #baja #livin by @reddog_roams

That’s a wrap, lots of miles later, 14 states, 2 pairs of shoes, 1 water bottle. I completed my thru hike of the Appalachian Trail. I started from the bottom of the US and walked to northern Maine. by @reddog_roams

Reddog AT Update..

Ok, ok, I know I owe you a ton of updates as I’ve moved 550+ miles on the AT since rejoining on 7/17. I have had a heck of a time getting back in the swing of things and hiking with old friends.

I’m posting a couple photos basically real-time to try to highlight The White Mountains of New Hampshire, including the Presidential Range which is highlighted by Mt. Washington at 6,250’

This section has been wicked beautiful but equally brutal. It’s mostly rock and rock faces to scale not really hiking. Which makes it unique and pure hustle to get any real distance in a day. It’s been a highlight of my AT trail experience.

Photo 1: sunrise Saturday, this is my stoke for the entire NH mountains

Photo 2: #FranconiaRidge

Photo 3: Sunset near Mt. Garfield (?)

Photo 4 & 5: Mt Washington Summit & old cog that still takes people to the top!

Yolo! It’s been a nice few weeks driving back to the east coast… more on those escapades later..

Vermont100 has been cancelled this year from the historical flooding that been happening for most of June & July. I’m bummed because I will not be able to complete the GS of Ultras. C’est La vie! Next up: the remaining 895 miles of the @appalachiantrail - let’s gooooo! #atclassof2023 #at2023 #reddoghikes by @reddog_roams
