The Gadwal Samasthanam, founded in 1290 CE and enduring through to 1948 CE, stood as one of the most powerful and storied Telugu warrior-ruled principalities in the Deccan. Descending from the exalted Somavanshi (Lunar) lineage and belonging to the Pakanati Reddy subcaste, the royal house traced its sovereign origins back to the Kakatiya military confederacy under founders such as Pedda Somabhupaludu (Soma Nadha). At its territorial and martial zenith, the Samasthanam presided over the strategic Krishna–Tungabhadra Doab, wielding undisputed sovereign dominion across vast swathes of present-day southern Telangana, western Andhra Pradesh, and eastern Karnataka—commanding key bastions from the royal seat at Gadwal across to Raichur and Siruguppa in the west, and extending south and east through Kurnool, Dhone, Nandyal, and into the sacred ranges of Srisailam and Ahobilam.

The defining zenith of Gadwal’s military prestige occurred during the illustrious reign of Maharaja Somashekara Ananda Bhupala Reddi. Confronted by regional imperial ambitions that sought to subjugate the principality, the Maharaja achieved an astonishing martial triumph by confronting and decisively routing the Grand Alliance assembled by the Second Nizam of Hyderabad alongside seven regional Nawabs (including Kurnool, Adoni, and Cuddapah). This legendary victory forced the Asaf Jahi court to formally acknowledge Gadwal’s unique autonomous suzerainty, granting it exceptional administrative and military independence, sovereign insignia, and minting privileges that cemented the Maharaja's reputation across the Deccan.

Beyond their battlefield supremacy, the Gadwal rulers embodied the finest traditions of regal statecraft, sacred architecture, and cultural patronage. They erected formidable bastions like the colossal stone Gadwal Fort and enriched great spiritual centers across the Deccan—most notably conferring imperial gifts, ritual endowments, and the famed ceremonial Gadwal cotton-and-silk vastrams (cloths) to Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala, alongside grand contributions at Ahobilam, Srisailam, and the royal Sri Chennakesava Swamy Temple, earning their realm the enduring title Vidvadgadwala. by @reddychronicles

The rulers of the Wanaparthy/Sugur Samsthanam were Motati Reddys. The samsthanam was founded around 1510 CE by Veera Krishna Reddy, who hails from present day Kadapa district and belongs to the Motati Reddy clan. The Rajas had epithets like "Ashta Bhasha Bahiri" which was used for their proficiency in eight languages and "Bahiri Balwant Bahadur" meaning the brave eagle. Raja Rameshwar Rao I famously bought Siddis of African origin to organize regiments, African Bodyguards and Wanaparthy Lancers, who assumed the title "Bin Bahiri" meaning the son of eagle.

The eastern campaign of King Kumaragiri Reddy (1386–1402) stood as the most widespread and militarily successful expansion of the Reddy dynasty. While King Kumaragiri—frequently known as Vasantaraya—was highly celebrated as a scholar, poet, and connoisseur of art rather than a martial leader, his administration and military strategy were heavily spearheaded by his brilliant prime minister, brother-in-law, and supreme commander, Kataya Vema Reddy. Entrusted with the state's military affairs, Kataya Vema launched an extensive eastern expedition to assert dominance over neighbouring territories and suppress regional insurrections.

Under his masterful generalship, the Coastal Andhra forces successfully marched deep into central and eastern India, stretching their sphere of influence through parts of Odisha, Bengal, and Jharkhand. A crucial achievement of this eastern campaign was the suppression of a major revolt in Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry). Following this victory and the premature death of Kumaragiri's young son Anavota II around 1395, Kataya Vema was appointed as the governor of the newly annexed Rajahmundry-Simhachalam territory. This strategic expansion effectively planted the seeds for the Eastern Reddi Kingdom, which Kataya Vema Reddy later established as an independent principality following the political upheaval and dethronement of Kumaragiri in 1402.

The Recherla Reddy dynasty served as the Mahasamantas under the Kakatiya Empire and constituted one of the most prominent Telugu warrior lineages in medieval Deccan history. Their territorial domain spanned vast regions across present-day Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, governing territories from Amanagullu in Nalgonda district, Pillalamarri in Suryapet district, to Mulugu and Narsampet in Warangal district, Elakurthi and Huzurabad in Karimnagar district, extending into Godisala, Palampeta, and Khammam regions such as Kusumanchi and Nelakondapally, and reaching through tracts up to the modern-day Krishna and Godavari districts.

During the political crisis around 1199 CE, following the demise of King Mahadeva on the battlefield and the capture of Prince Ganapatideva by the Seuna Yadavas of Devagiri, the empire was brought to the brink of collapse by internal rebellions and external invasions. In this critical interregnum, the Commander-in-Chief Recherla Rudra Reddy assumed the regency of the realm, suppressed rebelling chieftains like Nagati Bhupala, repelled hostile incursions, and maintained sovereign administrative order until Ganapatideva was safely restored to the throne, earning the historical titles Kakatiya Rajya Bharadhoureya (the bearer of the burden of the Kakatiya realm) and Kakatiya Rajya Sthapanacharya (the establisher of the Kakatiya kingdom).

Alongside their military supremacy, the Recherla Reddys left a profound civil engineering and architectural legacy across their territories, pioneering extensive agrarian infrastructure through the construction of massive irrigation tanks, lakes, and reservoirs, while erecting monumental temple complexes including the renowned Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple at Palampet, as well as the Nameshwara, Erakeshwara, and Trikuteswara temples at Pillalamarri and the architectural complexes at Ghanpur.

Maharaja Somashekhara Ananda Bhupala Reddi, also known as Peddasoma Bhupaludu and Somanadri, was six feet tall, with a dark skin, frank face and steel-grey eyes. The moustache covered his upper lip and his jaw jutted aggressively. He looked like a wrestler, his body big and powerful. Not a muscle was flabby; the fat, if any, had been turned into muscle, and the muscle into iron.

When Sayyad Davud, backed by Raichur's Nawab Basar Jung and Pragatur's Iduru Saab, attacked, Somanadri decisively defeated them. Humiliated, Davud persuaded the Nizam of Hyderabad to intervene. This time, the Nizam's forces were joined by Nawabs of Raichur, Gutti, Kurnool, Adoni, Pragatoor and Bellari leading to a massive battle on the banks of the Tungabhadra.

Somanadri crushed the enemy, killing several allied Nawabs of Pragatoor, Adoni and Bellari, and pushing the Nizam's forces back to Kurnool. Though trapped inside the fort during combat, his soldiers broke through and rescued their injured king.

Nizam's army was greatly disturbed. Raja Somanadri with the help of only a few soldiers killed a majority of their armies and caused heavy destruction. Realizing they could not win, the Nizam sued for peace. As part of the settlement, Somanadri received Kurnool lands and prized cannons "Yellamma", "Rama" and "Lakshmana", returning triumphantly to Gadwal as a victorious hero.
