5 months ago today, I stepped on stage twice. Once to deliver the doctoral student commencement speech and second to be hooded as Dr. Justin T. Guy.

Both moments are forever etched in my heart as they were God’s promises known and unknown to me. When I said yes to God about going back to school for my doctorate, I didn’t know what that journey would look like or even what I would do after. Yet, He knows the plans He has for me and they definitely were for good and not evil; for a future and a hope.

I’m living in answered prayers. Not just my prayers, but the prayers of my wife, family, friends, and even strangers who I have yet to encounter. The prayer of people who need me to be obedient to the will of God and walk in my God-given identity, purpose, and calling.

Since graduation, I’ve:
• Facilitated a session at a men’s mental health tour
• Facilitated a conversation regarding the systems of self-care for the Louisiana’s Children Trust Fund
• Scaled my private practice
• Started supervising LMSW’s for their LCSW’s
• Guest speaker on podcasts
• Started seeing clients for psychotherapy
• Transitioned from corporate to higher education
• Appointed as the NASW-LA Conference Chair-Elect
• Mentored black male youth going to college
• Accepted into the 12th cohort of the Urban Leadership Development Initiative

And God says, He’s just getting started!

I am breaking generational cycles and patterns and forging new paths for my future children and their children, as well as other people’s children and so forth. My gifts belong to God and I’m choosing to use them to ensure the legacy I leave here continues to ensure the next generation is healthy, whole, and possesses a better advantage than I had.

I chose to trust the process, and so far it’s been blowing my mind! I can’t wait to see what God does in the next 5 months! 🙌🏾 by @redeemingsolutions

Do you have to forgive someone who abused you? Can faith keep you in danger? Licensed clinicians, faith leaders, and advocates explore domestic violence, forgiveness, and healing in the Black church.

For many survivors, faith is a lifeline. It offers hope, community, and strength. But when scripture is used to say “stay and pray,” “keep the family together,” or “forgive and forget,” faith can become one more reason a person stays somewhere unsafe.

In this Domestic Violence Awareness Month episode of the Black Mental Health Matters Show, host Shawn Cunningham leads an honest, trauma-informed conversation about where faith, forgiveness, and abuse meet, and how churches can protect survivors instead of silencing them.

From a clinical view, forgiveness is a personal process, not a requirement for healing and never a reason to return to harm. Survivors can honor their faith and still choose safety, boundaries, and professional support.

Black men don’t have to carry every burden simply because previous generations taught them how to survive carrying it. Faith gives us permission to distinguish between what was necessary for survival and what is necessary for healing and sometimes, putting the burden down is itself an act of courage.

There comes a point where you have to stop blocking your own purpose and give yourself permission to become everything you were destined to be.

I’m excited to share that Redeeming Solutions, LLC is now accepting new clients virtually for psychotherapy in Louisiana.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Doctor of Social Work, my approach to therapy is grounded in evidence-based practice, genuine connection, and the belief that your current chapter does not have to define your entire story.

I also believe deeply that faith and mental health can coexist. For those who desire it, I’m honored to create space where faith, hope, healing, and clinical practice can be part of the conversation.

Therapy is not about having all the answers. Sometimes it’s simply about having a safe space to slow down, process what you’ve been carrying, understand yourself more deeply, and begin moving forward.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of collaborating with the Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund and delivering a presentation at their annual Grantee’s Conference. This conference brought together all the state’s local community agencies and organizations that provide essential services to children residing in Louisiana.

My presentation titled “The Systems of Self-Care” aimed to equip these individuals with practical knowledge about how our bodies signal stress, strain, and the impending risk of burnout. I provided them with the necessary tools to become aware of these alarming signs and symptoms and encouraged them to take proactive measures to mitigate the likelihood of exhaustion and burnout.

Self-care transcends the notion of indulging in bubble baths and vacations. It encompasses being consciously aware of our bodies, possessing the ability to regulate our thoughts and emotions, establishing healthy boundaries, recovering from draining experiences, cultivating meaningful connections, and sustaining ourselves regardless of the circumstances we encounter.

Our bodies have the resilience to endure crises. However, they struggle when crises become an integral part of our daily lives.

When one door closes, God opens multiple doors.

I’m excited to share that I have joined the ranks of academia as an Adjunct Professor at Liberty University and the University of Kentucky College of Social Work!

When I reflect on the journey—from being a doctoral student who once sat in classrooms trying to figure out what my future would look like, to now having the opportunity to teach, mentor, and pour into the next generation of social workers—I’m reminded that the Lord truly orders our steps.

This opportunity means more to me than another title. It represents purpose, preparation, perseverance, and answered prayers. I have a new level of responsibility to steward.

I’m looking forward to bringing my 14 years of experience in clinical practice, leadership, behavioral health, research, and social work education into the classroom while helping students recognize the impact they can make in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

I’m humbled. I’m grateful. And I’m ready for what God is doing in this next chapter.

The work continues.
The impact expands.
The assignment gets greater.

A year ago, a vision God gave me became reality, and Redeeming Solutions, LLC was born.

Like any birthing process, it was initially exciting, then difficult and puzzling with concerns and obstructions. However, after much pushing and encouragement, the delivery occurred. And the joy settled in once the finished product was revealed.

Being the first business owner in my family carries a heavy weight. Sometimes I think more than being the family’s first doctor or accepting my call into ministry. But I am reminded of the words the Lord spoke to me when He called me, “Fear not, for I am with you.”

As I celebrate the first year of being the Owner and Founder of Redeeming Solutions, LLC, I reflect on what it took to get me here. And truly, it has been nothing but the grace of God.

I can genuinely say I am proud of myself and humbled to have been chosen for this purpose.

I may not know exactly what the Lord has next in store for me, but I am confident that eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has entered into the heart of man. And it’s going to be exceeding and abundantly more than I could ask or imagine.

It is my prayer that, as I trust the process of uncomfortable transformation, I can support others in the same manner here locally, nationally, and, one day, internationally.

1 year down, and a lifetime to go.

It’s time to put this faith and works into practice.

Today, men were given the safe space to begin the healing process because of the @justhealexperience sponsored by the Louisiana Success Council.

Far too long, men have carried the weight of performance and perfection instead of receiving grace and gratitude.

The visionary @kingjaybarnett led the men with practical and impactful tools to implement immediately while encouraging them to give theirselves permission to heal. My brother @wintonranderson created an atmosphere where men would learn how to heal from their parental wounds that have adversely affected them. Chris Barideaux discussed the significance of mastering emotional intelligence and the benefits that come along side this skill. And finally, I had the honor educating the men on the value of self-care and how to implement healthy coping skills to fill your cup.

What took place today created a ripple effect of change that will be vertebrate throughout the city. Community was formed. Care was enacted. And compassion was demonstrated.

This is only the beginning for positive transformation taking place in the minds and hearts of men.
