It’s officially October 1st, which means we’re just 28 days away from celebrating one of our favorite Red Hook traditions the Barnacle Parade!

This parade is always an opportunity to celebrate the resilience, creativity, love, and community spirit that make Red Hook so special.

This year, Red Hook Art Project (RHAP) will be participating a little differently and we want YOU to be part of it!

On October 29th, RHAP will have a community table outside of our studio highlighting our new Red Hook Wayfinding Project, being developed alongside young people and adult artists from right here in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

We invite our neighbors, families, young people, local businesses, artists, and community partners to stop by, learn more about the project, see some of the ideas we're developing, and most importantly help us shape the wayfinding signs that will represent our community.

These signs are about more than directions. They are about telling the story of Red Hook our landmarks, businesses, culture, creativity, history, and the people who make this neighborhood what it is.

📅 Save the Date: October 29th
📍 Outside Red Hook Art Project

Come celebrate the Barnacle Parade, share your ideas, and help us create something that represents the heart of Red Hook.

We can’t wait to see you there! by @redhookartproject

From Access to Opportunity.

At Red Hook Art Project, we don't simply provide art classes we build pathways.
A young person can enter RHAP at age 7, discover their creative voice, build skills and confidence, receive mentorship, exhibit their work, become an Emerging Artist, gain paid work experience, and grow into a creative professional, teaching artist, mentor, or community leader.

At the heart of it all is what makes RHAP different relationships before programs. We are building a long-term ecosystem of opportunity around young people and their families.

ART SAVES LIVES.
ACCESS → BELONGING → SKILLS → VOICE → OPPORTUNITY → LEADERSHIP → COMMUNITY → TRANSFORMATION

Our Values Are More Than Words on a Wall.

At Red Hook Art Project, our Core Values and Theory of Change guide how we teach, mentor, create, and build community. We want every young person who walks through our doors to know that their creativity matters, their voice matters, and they have the power to create change.

Our values creativity, dedication, patience, kindness, self-awareness, honest communication, collaboration, social change, and celebrating diversity help young people develop skills that extend far beyond the art studio.

Our Theory of Change starts with meeting young people exactly where they are. Through art, mentorship, resources, knowledge, and opportunities to lead, we help them build confidence and creative power that can ultimately contribute to social change and justice.

For nonprofits serving young people, having clear values and a Theory of Change is important because young people deserve more than programs they deserve intentional spaces built around trust, belonging, accountability, possibility, and purpose.

At RHAP, we don't just ask young people to make art. We give them space to discover who they are and imagine what they can change.

Because ART SAVES LIVES.

WELCOME BACK TO THE TABLE!

Tomorrow, we officially welcome our students back to the Red Hook Art Project, and we couldn’t be more excited!

There’s something special about gathering around the table together a place where ideas are shared, art is created, conversations happen, friendships grow, and young people are reminded that their voices matter.
We have so much planned new art projects, new opportunities, meaningful conversations, creative exploration, and plenty of moments to simply laugh, learn, and CREATE together.

As we enter the final months of 2026, we’re excited to see what our young artists will imagine, discover, and bring to life.

The tables are ready. The art supplies are waiting. Now all we need are our young people.

Here’s to a beautiful beginning to the end of 2026!
Welcome back, RHAP students. Let’s CREATE!

Our community is strongest when every story has a place, every voice is heard, and every person knows they belong

these pieces of artwork explores race, identity, justice, equity, belonging, healing, and hope not as separate conversations, but as pieces of one shared community story.

Because our experiences may be different, but our stories are connected. And when we create space for one another to be seen, heard, and represented, we create a stronger community.

Every story matters.
Every voice deserves to be heard.
Everyone deserves to belong by @redhookartproject

RHAP's mission emphasizes the importance of creative self-expression for youth. In addition to their amazing art, music, & academic/stress management classes- RHAP also expands their work to meet community needs: addressing food insecurity & living necessities. THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!

We had the opportunity to experience an incredible art fair that brought together artists from all over the world, making art accessible and creating space for so many different voices, styles, and stories.

But what made this experience even more special for us was seeing our own community represented!

One of our RHAP students, Sashia, had her artwork showcased alongside so many talented artists and right there with her was Shelby, one of our Red Hook residents and artists!

To walk into an art space in Manhattan and see their work hanging there was such a beautiful reminder of why exposure and opportunity matter.

Our young artists deserve to see their work beyond the walls of their classrooms and communities. They deserve to take up space in galleries, studios, museums, art fairs, and creative spaces throughout NYC and beyond.

And seeing Shashia continuing to grow from a young artist developing her voice at RHAP to a college student exhibiting her work in spaces alongside artists from around the world is exactly the kind of journey we want our younger students to witness.

And we LOVE seeing Red Hook represented through Shelby as well!

Red Hook was in the building!

Congratulations, Sashia and Shelby. Keep creating. Keep showing up. Keep taking up space.

This is why we say ART SAVES LIVES.

THIS is what it’s all about.

From the moment Sashia found RHAP, she came in knowing that art was more than something she loved she understood that her creativity could open doors and help her build a future.

And she has been putting in the work ever since.

From developing her portfolio and getting accepted into LaGuardia High School, to continuing her education in college, Sashia has consistently taken the opportunities in front of her and made them work for HER.

A few years ago, through our partnership with Art Gowanus, Sashia took on an intense application process for an incredible opportunity. She completed the application, submitted her work, and GOT ACCEPTED!

Today, while still attending college, she is leading her own art studio, developing her practice, and showcasing her artwork in major spaces. She continues to open doors for herself while showing other young artists what is possible when talent meets focus, preparation, and opportunity.

This is what we mean at RHAP when we talk about developing Emerging Artists and young leaders.

We don't just want our students to create beautiful artwork. We want them to understand the power of their creativity. We want them to learn how to apply for opportunities, advocate for themselves, build relationships, develop careers, lead spaces, and eventually open doors for the young people coming behind them.

Sashia understood the assignment.

She grabbed every opportunity she could, put in the work, and continues to lead the way for young girls and boys who look like her.

Congratulations, Sashia! Your RHAP family is incredibly proud of you. Keep creating. Keep growing. Keep leading. And most importantly keep opening those doors.

ART SAVES LIVES.
