A little R&D in the kitchen today because TWO summers ago I planted horseradish. Sometimes I grow or make things just to say “Yeah, I did that.” Or, at least know how it’s made. I had to watch at least four different videos on how to get the horseradish out of the ground, peel it, chop it and put it in the food processor. 1. My horseradish ( horseradii?) were more like really thin carrots, not parsnip-like which is what I kept seeing. 2. Because they were thin and/or knobby, it was very time consuming peeling them. And finally, 3. What’s all the fuss about wearing a gas mask because of the fumes? Yeah, it was pungent but not enough that you needed an eyewash kit or something. 😂 Anyway, it tasted spicy and would be perfect added to a little whipped cream or mayo as a condiment to a classic German Tafelspitz or even an Italian Bollito Misto. Bottom line: kind of a hassle and time-wise definitely cost more than a bottle of Gold’s, but tasted pretty darn good! #horseradish #homegrown #mohawkvalley by @redhouseproject

So I did something totally out of my comfort zone these past two days. Went to Klinkharthall’s Poetry Festival in Sharon Springs, NY. As most people know, I’m definitely not a poet- my writing is usually food-focused (Something Tasty on Substack and the short story collection that came out of it) or commercial fiction - I.e. my new novel Randy & Rini. But I wanted to meet Sherman Alexie (and I did!), listen to what the other poets had to say, and took a poetry workshop with the lovely Tina Chang. Thank you Tina for being kind and patient with the one poem I wrote 23 years ago! Kudos to @klinkharthall and particularly Paul Muldoon for organizing this gathering for a decade now. Can’t wait to read your work Paul, Mary Jo Salter, @shermanalexie.official and @tinachang_poet #supportthearts #sharonsprings #upstatenewyork by @redhouseproject

This year’s harvest - a single butternut squash (last year we had 11) and 9 small acorn squash. I’ve noticed even in the markets, the acorn squash seem smaller this year. #growyourownfood #mohawkvalley by @redhouseproject

Today’s Little Falls Cheese Festival haul. Always eager to try farmers/vendors we hadn’t seen before. Especially interested in trying a “Classic Scottish” cheddar from @argylecheesefarmer since we just got back from Scotland. It was softer than your average cheddar but oh so tangy which was wonderful. The cumin-flavored Gouda was neat and the quark was still not like the German quark I remember but it had a goat cheese like consistency which I loved. #cheese #littlefallsny #mohawkvalley by @redhouseproject

Had to improvise a drying rack for my first (small) red onion harvest. There are still more in the garden but these seemed ready. In case you’re wondering, it’s actually part of a spaetzle maker. 🇩🇪 #growyourownfood #onions #mohawkvalley by @redhouseproject

When your Delta flight is cancelled because of mechanical issues and you thank the crew for giving you another full day in Edinburgh (and curry for dinner!) you spend the day back in the city practically feeling like a local. #edinburgh #scotland by @redhouseproject

Since we now live near Lock 17 near the Erie Canal, I was keen to see the Falkirk Wheel which through an aspiring feat of engineering lifts boats up like a giant claw thereby connecting Forth and Clyde Canal to Union Canal. We didn’t get on the boat but it was fun to watch before we headed over to see The Kelpies. The largest equine statues in the world that are supposed to represent water spirits from Scottish folklore. They were impressive. #falkirkwheel #kelpies #scotland by @redhouseproject

Inveraray Castle described as an iconic Scottish visitor attraction in the highlands. Posh furnishings and too much stuff! Need a drum or a sword? My favorite room? The kitchen of course. Look at all those copper pans! And the funky cabinet to store raisins and sugar and other good things to bake with. Still in the Campbell family after hundreds of years. Had the weather cooperated would have walked through the gardens but can’t complain since the weather has been okay but would have liked to at least see more of Loch Lomond:Trossachs National Park rather than just fog and clouds. #scottishhighlands #castles by @redhouseproject

Lots of murals on the way up to see the Glasgow Necropolis today. Interesting history of trying to get cemeteries out of urban areas because of diseases so putting everyone on a hill above the city seemed logical. #glasgow #architecture by @redhouseproject

Not that impressed with the Reid Building designed by Steven Holl Architects and part of the Glasgow School of Art after the original Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, had not one but two fires in both 2014 and 2018. If you are familiar with Holl’s work, he did a public library in Queens right on the East River which is kind of neat and not as brutal as this. #glasgow #architecture by @redhouseproject

Our last night in Edinburgh we went to Cafe St. Honore. I’m not sure how chef Neil Forbes and his team do it but I think they pretty much write a new menu everyday based on what’s truly seasonal- impressive. For instance: an endive/ radicchio and pear salad followed by some Scottish venison on top of barley. Delicious! @cafesthonore Yesterday, after a quick train ride to Glasgow, we had vegetable samosas and lamb Rogan Josh (which we haven’t had since we left NYC.) Look at the size of this naan and the awesome chairs! Thank you for a delicious meal @mother_india1 Finally, today at lunch, we couldn’t resist lunch @chaophrayathai . Besides the fact that the space is absolutely gorgeous ( formerly the site of the Glasgow Liberal Club) the beef brisket curry, corn fritters with spicy vegetables and shrimp pad Thai were awesome. Plus they have cute elephants lining the hall on the way to the bathroom.😂 #foodporn #scotland by @redhouseproject
