Can’t believe it’s been 10 years! since The Hood premiered. This month marks the anniversary of its release, and it’s since amassed 2 million YouTube views with a 93.5% like ratio 😱. Thank you to all the cast and crew who helped bring this film to life—especially my producer, Julion @cornercuts_grooming who was there through every step & funded it. A big thank you as well to my family, mandem, friends from my hood, & everyone who shared the film. I really appreciate it. This film will always hold a special place in my heart, as I was only 19 when I wrote, directed, produced, & edited my debut short. For those who know me personally, you’ll remember I was a footballer. After being released from Crystal Palace F.C. Academy, I was devastated and decided to quit due to an ongoing Achilles injury. A lot of people said I was silly for quitting, as I was one of the best on ends & could’ve made it big. At first, I wasn’t sure what to do with myself, but I knew I was good at art, photography, and self-shooting. That’s when I thought, let me try this filmmaking course. After The Hood was made, I wasn’t on releasing it as my course leader agreed that she made a mistake we should’ve done my original voiceover script. Looking back, I’m glad I did, as it opened doors to opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I’ve been blessed to be mentored by industry legends. To any creatives, my advice is, Release that song. Shoot that film. Launch that podcast, YouTube channel, fashion brand, or business. When I started, I had no idea that The Hood would be as big as it became. Special thanks to my Mum ❤️ for pushing me to take the Met Film School practical filmmaking course & for sorting out the course fees. And thank you to my dad & Uncle Leighton for always telling me, “The sky’s the limit” since I was a kid. That advice has shaped my mindset & work ethic, opening doors I never thought possible. If you’re a creative or filmmaker, keep an eye out for my debut e-book on breaking into the film and TV industry—it’ll save you a few years of trial and error. My first panel talk! Thank you, Sharon & LIFT, for selecting me to speak. It was great to hear all the panel speakers’ stories.
