We said goodbye to Carl last night. The cancer had spread rapidly and his quality of life took a drastic dive yesterday afternoon. This is one of the most difficult things I’ve had to experience but I was fortunate enough to have my parents and friends here to support both of us. I am eternally grateful for the two extra weeks he gifted me to say goodbye. In classic Carl fashion, he was helping me process and guiding me through the end which I never thought would come. I have been overwhelmed with the all the kind words, treats and pictures everyone sent in support. We are lucky guys to have such awesome people around us. Thank you to everyone who has impacted both of ours lives. As hard as this is, I can’t stop thinking about all the amazing adventures, mountains climbed, endless lounging, long morning walks, barking at delivery drivers, pup cups, your pink spotty belly, your weird dangly toes, those tiny ears that never grew, twitchy naps and most importantly, the joy you brought everyone around you. The smile strangers would get by just seeing you was, and will always be your greatest gift. Eleven perfect years with the best friend I never knew I needed. Thank you for being there for me and all my people. There will never be another Carl. You never did tell me why the bridge of your nose always smelled like a brand new can of tennis balls, but I am lucky you shared it with me. Thank you for choosing me all those years ago. Hi everyone- quick update. Carl had a tough weekend that required an ER visit and emergency surgery. The good news first. We get more time with Carl. He is happy, full of energy and most importantly not in any pain or discomfort. I’m immeasurably grateful for this bonus time. Thank you all that have support us this weekend and have already reached out. The not so great news. He had a bleed around his heart that made it difficult for him to breathe. We were able to treat that in time on Saturday and he’s made a full recovery. He is back to his normal self. He even tried to jump out of a moving car to eat an Amazon driver on the way home from the cardiologist. Has not changed a bit. Unfortunately, this was caused by a fast spreading cancer in his heart, that most likely will continue to spread. We have an oncology appointment next week to identify the best treatment/chemo plan. The cancer is highly treatable but not curable. Dogs don’t respond to chemo like humans(I.e. won’t lose his hair, feel sick or lethargic). This is all focused on improving quality of life. The average prognosis for time after the start of treatment is not long. While I know this is heavy and not what anyone wants to hear, I feel fortunate for the extra time we have to bark at delivery drivers, chew on his leash, lean our body weight on strangers and howl at the moon. I intend to make the most of the time we have left with the big fella. I’ll keep providing updates as I have them. Thank you all who have loved him and all the random walks, snuggles and bacon you’ve snuck him along the way.
