🏆 We have a CHAMPION! 🏆🇲🇽 The Oceanic Manta Ray wins the Fish World Cup!In the closest final imaginable, Mexico’s Oceanic Manta Ray edged Ecuador’s Whale Shark 65 to 63. Two votes. That is how tight it was.Votes were combined from our Instagram post, Facebook post, and Stories, so if your fish won on one platform, the final total came from all three.What a month. From 16 fish down to one, every single match was decided by you. Thank you to everyone who voted, shared, and cheered on their favourite fish. Welcome back, Daisy! 🌊We're excited to welcome Daisy Anderson (she/her) back to REEF, this time as our newest Marine Conservation Fellow, serving from July 2026 through May 2027. Some of you may recognize her, Daisy joined us as an Education & Conservation Intern in Summer 2025, and we're thrilled to have her back on the team.Daisy graduated from James Madison University in May 2026 with a bachelor's degree in biology, concentrating in Ecology and Environmental Biology. She discovered her love for marine biology in college, where a passion for conservation and public outreach took hold. She's driven to bridge the gap between formal science and public understanding, and she's especially excited to combine hands-on wildlife work with education that inspires others to care for the natural world.When she's not working, you'll find her running, reading, hiking, or playing guitar with friends and family. The real World Cup wrapped up last night with Spain beating Argentina, but our final is just getting started. Two Eastern Pacific giants lead their nations out for the Golden Fish Cup. Each side fields a full starting eleven of home fish: Ecuador captained by the Whale Shark, the largest fish in the ocean, and Mexico by the Oceanic Manta Ray, the brainiest fish in the sea with a wingspan up to 7 metres. Meet the reef’s most unwanted guest. 🦁🐟Lionfish aren’t native to the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf of Mexico, but they spread fast with no natural predators and a voracious appetite for native reef fish. Left unchecked, they throw entire reef ecosystems off balance.Here’s the good news: REEF has been watching since the beginning. Through our Volunteer Fish Survey Project, trained divers act as an early-warning system, and through our lionfish derbies, that data turns into action. To date, REEF derbies have removed 38,000+ lionfish, including our biggest total yet this year: 2,480 removed in a single two-day event.This is what community-driven conservation looks like.
