The whole food chain gets unbalanced. ⁠
⁠
This is an urchin barren. Without sunflower sea stars and otters, purple sea urchin populations sky rocket, wiping out food for other creatures that typically fill a kelp forest.⁠
⁠

Reef Check’s North Coast Regional Manager Ian Norton and Dive Into Science Program Manager Morgan Murphy-Cannella spotted a sunflower star (Pycnopodia Helianthoides) while conducting an MPA monitoring survey at Van Damme in Mendocino County on October 28th, 2023.⁠
⁠
The populations of Pycnopodia along the North Coast have been decimated over the last decade by seastar wasting disease. The loss of this predator has played a key role in the explosion of purple urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus).⁠

This is a huge find and great news for the prospect of species recovery!⁠
⁠

It can be overwhelming trying to figure out how to help the ecosystems we love. Our 30 years of experience in long-term reef monitoring have taught us that one singular person can’t do it all. We need communities working together and in parallel, doing small actions throughout the year. ⁠

Thank you for joining us and biting back at the purple sea urchin 👾 last weekend! You ate 🍣, drank 🍷, drew 🖌️, dyed 🫟, danced 🕺 your way out of this eco crisis, and helped the kelp forest!

Thanks to our amazing collaborators who showed us how to prepare fresh uni toasts @geronimocramos with fresh uni provided by @wildblueuni who farms it, to @seelie.studio who prepare le dye baths for the gorgeous bandanas, to @keystoneforager who showed all the seaweeds and live urchins, and went diving for it, to @reefcheckfoundation for talking to us about all the initiatives, and to @marbl.is for showing us how purple sea urchin can be made into new materials.

Thanks to @o2aa.oakland for hosting us in this dreamy spot and to @g_o_o_d_h_o_t for opening its doors for a preview!

You’ll find us at Caspar cove next week, diving for more sea urchins and restoring the kelp forest up there - join us for this last community event of the season!! 🌊

We’re back at Caspar Cove this Saturday, September 26 for our final regular community dive of the season, and I’m really looking forward to this one.

We’ll spend the day doing what we’ve been doing all season — getting in the water, removing overabundant purple urchins, and doing what we can to help the kelp keep coming back.

Then after 4:00 PM, we’ll gather for our first Caspar Cove Project Awards Ceremony.
I’m especially excited about this part. So much of what happens at Caspar Cove comes down to people quietly showing up again and again — diving, filling tanks, helping on shore, talking with new people, sharing what they know, bringing food, and simply being part of the community.

Saturday gives us a chance to stop for a moment and recognize some of those people.

If you’ve been meaning to come out, this would be a great day to join us.

Jade and kelp may not have an obvious, direct connection. However, the ocean got major support from the Jade community in Monterey, California, this summer. ⁠

This expedition will take you to Panamá’s Caribbean coast to explore the Bocas del Toro archipelago. During the trip, you will be trained as a Reef Check EcoDiver and collect valuable data on this biodiverse hotspot. Long-term monitoring data will support this ecosystem through challenges such as climate change, disease, development, and overfishing, which are becoming more prevalent every year. ⁠

When young people are invited to speak, communities are inspired to act. 🎤🌊

Our first Take the Mic: Students Speak for the Ocean, happened on the beach in Avalon and...WOW!

Six young people from Avalon and communities across Southern California prepared, trained, and stepped up to share their stories about the ocean...how they connected to it, why they care about it, and why they want to protect it.

And people listened. 💙✨

They were supported by a student event team helping with photography, journalism, social media, setup, and more, while local Avalon students created artwork and jumped in to help bring the event to life.

SO MANY organizations came together for youth.

From helping HFAdventureCommunity put this event together to showing up with real ways for young people to learn, volunteer, explore, connect, and get involved! Guests added their own hopes, promises and messages to our Wave of Voices - The Ocean is Listening, and as the sun went down, we gathered on the beach to watch 🌊Oceans with David Attenborough and share the 30x30 message... Protecting 30% of our ocean by 2030... If we save the ocean, we save our world. 🌎💙

This is exactly what we hoped Take the Mic could be...we are just getting started.

The new Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) report plainly states the importance of this work. Long-term monitoring gives scientists and managers the information needed to understand baselines, map long-term trends, find correlations between reef changes and their causes, and gather recovery data. ⁠

In this way, we can stay laser-focused on conservation goals, concentrating efforts in places that have proven to be most effective.⁠
