Want to get better at fish ID but don’t know where to start? 🐠

Here are my 5 simple steps to learning fish ID:

1️⃣ Learn the families
2️⃣ Learn your location
3️⃣ Look for the bold features
4️⃣ Write down the clues
5️⃣ Go diving!

You don’t need to memorise every fish in the ocean. Start small, learn what you’re actually seeing, and keep practising.

And honestly… the more you dive, the easier it gets! 🌊

Want to get better at fish ID? 🐠 Here are 5 simple steps to get you started:

1️⃣ Learn your fish families — surgeonfish, butterflyfish, wrasse, parrotfish, angelfish… knowing the family gives you a head start.

2️⃣ Learn your local fish — focus on the species you’re actually likely to see where you dive.

3️⃣ Learn their characteristics — colours, patterns, body shape, fins, markings and other little clues.

4️⃣ Use a dive slate — write down little clues for each species you can refer back to

5️⃣ Go diving! 🌊 The more fish you see, the more familiar they become.

Fish ID gets easier with practice — so get out there and start spotting! 👀🐟

They might all look like variations of blue + yellow, but there are some sneaky little details that give them away…

It’s Dory!! 💙🐟

The Indo-Pacific Blue Tang, also known as the Palette Surgeonfish or Royal Blue Tang, is found from the east coast of Africa through South Asia and across to Australia — and is commonly seen on the Great Barrier Reef! 🌊

🎨 Bold black markings in the shape of an artist’s palette
💛 Bright yellow tail + yellow tips to the pectoral fins
💙 That unmistakable bold blue body colour

Could you ID Dory on a dive? 👀

Not Dory!! 👀💙

The Atlantic Blue Tang is found in the western Atlantic, from the Bahamas and Caribbean down to Brazil. 🌊

Unlike Dory, these guys don’t have that distinctive black palette-shaped pattern!

💙 Bold blue body colour
💛 Yellow/blue colouring around the tail
🟡 Juveniles can actually be bright yellow before changing colour as they grow
🌿 Important algae grazers, helping keep reefs free from excess algae

Dory’s Atlantic cousin… but can you tell them apart? 👀

Blue… but make it POWDER 🩵🐟

The Powder Blue Tang is found across the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa through to the Pacific. 🌊

They’re usually found around shallow coral reefs, where they spend their days grazing on algae.

🩵 Powder-blue body
🖤 Dark face + bold black markings
💛 Bright yellow fins
🌿 Algae-grazing reef cleaners
⚠️ And yes… they have the classic surgeonfish scalpel by their tail!

Would you recognise one underwater? 👀

Plot twist… this one isn’t actually blue (it might just look blue underwater)! 💜💛

The Yellowtail Tang is found in the western Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, and is one of tho by @reefin.co

I’m Becky — the person behind REEFIN 🌊

24, from the UK, currently somewhere between Australia, a dive boat and whatever ocean I can get myself into 🐠

And that surgeonfish are a part of an even bigger family called Acanthuridae?!

A new series where I share tips and tricks of how to identify species families and then move onto individual species 📖

For the first episode we are looking at the family Acanthuridae which is made up of Surgeonfish, Tangs and Unicornfish!!🦄🧑‍⚕️

Within this family there are believed to be about 86 species!!! That’s a whole lot to try and memorise so it’s good to firstly look at the common characteristics that put the fish into this family. 🐠🐟

The key thing to look out for in surgeonfish is actually what gave them the name…

at the base of their tail they have a little spine - often a contrasting colour - which is called a 🩵 Scalpel 🩵
This little spine is a great way to identify them

Scalpel = Surgeon 🧑🏼‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️

Other key things to look for:
They are reef fish so think about the location
They are laterally compressed
They have a small mouth
They are (typically) about 15-40 cm long

Making notes is a great way to learn fish ID and fish families, using little doodles and key characteristics that you can refer back to when trying to identify a fish in the future!!

Logged & Spotted: Shark Point 🦈🌊

One of Gili Trawangan’s most iconic dive sites — and a pretty good place to start a dive log. 🐢🪸

Reef sharks, turtles, cuttlefish, sweetlips, Moorish idols, batfish, ribbon eels & morays — all packed into one reef.

Turning the dive sites I love into the tees I actually want to wear 🤿
