Araña cangrejo de las flores 🌺 (Thomisus onustus).

Estos preciosos arácnidos tienen un cuerpo achatado y ancho, con las patas delanteras más largas y extendidas hacia los lados, lo que recuerda a un cangrejo (de ahí su nombre).

🔍Pueden cambiar de color en un proceso que tarda varios días (blanco, amarillo, rosa..) para mimetizarse con la flor donde se esconden. Su camuflaje también las protege de depredadores, como aves o avispas cazadoras.

No tejen telarañas para cazar, sino que acechan a insectos mucho más grandes que visitan las flores (abejas, mariposas, moscas…) e inyectan veneno para paralizarlos. Totalmente inofensivo para los humanos.

El pigmento rojo de sus dos ojos delanteros que se ve en la foto es una especie de filtro solar. Como la araña cangrejo vive sobre flores muy claras y reflectantes, este color ayuda a proteger las células fotorreceptoras de la luz intensa y a mejorar el contraste visual.

What is your favorite spider to see in nature? I think wasp spiders are pretty cool!

Although they’re called wasp spiders, they’re not wasps at all. The name comes from the black-and-yellow striped coloration on their abdomen, which mimics the look of a wasp as a form of protection. Did you also know that these spiders have been spreading more widely across Germany in recent decades due to warmer climates? They originally came from the Mediterranean region but have expanded northward as temperatures have risen.

This is Bothrops jararaca, one of the most well-known venomous snakes in Brazil. It belongs to the Viperidae family and is mostly found in the Atlantic Forest. While its venom can be dangerous, it also played a key role in science: it was used in the development of blood pressure medication. Like most snakes, it avoids human contact and only bites in self-defense.
