Always the same, never the same.

54 Sweaters crocheted, unravelled and crocheted again with the same yarn and pattern.

I started π‘†π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒 almost exactly 2 years ago, and even though there have been times where I was unable to crochet much, I still have been working on it in some way every single day.
I wanted to find out what would happen with the yarn over time. Would it wear down, thin out, lose fibers, break apart, eventually dissolve itself? I had no idea what was going to happen and how long the performance was going to last. And I still don't know, because even after crocheting and unravelling 50 sweaters with the same yarn, the yarn is still intact and has almost no visible traces from all the use. However, it is becoming harder to work with. From running through my hands countless times, the yarn now has a waxy, sticky feel to it. It is more stubborn to work with, it tangles and knots easily.
I relate this strongly to memories that keep repeating itself. And I ask myself: How many times do we have to re-live a memory and replay it in our head until it loses its horror and becomes just that, a memory? How many years do we have to spend rewiring our brains, trying to create patterns that aren't destructive? Is it time well spent? Or is it time wasted? Will it only be worthwhile if there's a cathartic release waiting in the end, justifying the time spent in terms of being productive?
I had the idea that maybe there would be a big cathartic release at the end of π‘†π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒. But I am starting to recognize that it will be more of a quiet disappearing, fading away so slowly it's not even noticeable until it's gone and over.

My durational performance π‘†π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒 is about cyclical patterns of Trauma.

Trauma can lead to the unconscious tendency to repeat a traumatic event or its circumstances by symbolically or literally re-enacting the event, or putting oneself in situations where the event is likely to occur again. And while the mind may be able to eventually recognize these patterns and want to break them, the body will still be stuck and thus keep the cycle going.

π‘†π‘€π‘’π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘Ÿ 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑐𝑒 follows three stages in a cyclical pattern.
Unravelling the sweater is the stage that is emotionally the hardest and where I feel the most vulnerable. My kneeling position, looking down or gazing up, the movement of my arms, the yarn falling into my lap, evoke feelings and memories that are purely held in the body and exist without an image or a sound. It only takes about 15 minutes to unravel the entire sweater, but it feels much longer, as if my body was travelling thirty years back in time.

Rewinding the yarn is physically and mentally the most challenging stage. Unlike the other two stages, this stage is unpredictable in terms of time. If the yarn is not tangled at all, it takes about an hour. However, it has taken me up to 8 hours battling tangled and knotted yarn. During this stage, feelings of hopelessness, futility, regret, grief and shame arise. I have had to fight the overwhelming urge to give up at this point many times.

Crocheting the sweater is the most time-consuming stage and takes about 7 hours. It is also a time of reconciliation and recharge. While it is an easy and repetitive pattern, I still have to count stitches and rows and am forced to stay present, allowing for my body to feel grounded and finding comfort and solace in the symbolic growing hug from a sweater.
