Spent 20 years avoiding the piano because of a bad experience when I was 8? Probably not the full story but honestly them early experiences really impact the way our journey moves. I feel our early years can define the choices we make and I always found writing to be the “safest” creative outlet for me because i could work without judgement When I finally decided to try again, I realised the traditional way of learning wasn’t built for how I actually make music. Ditching standard routines and building a custom, 10-minute daily loop changed everything. The biggest lesson? The less you try to overwhelm yourself with at once, the bigger the long-term impact. A few years ago, I would’ve spent more time thinking about the camera I was bringing than the conversations I was about to have. This time, I took a tiny camera and a bum bag. Ironically, I came away with something much bigger. It’s funny how often we focus on looking like we belong, instead of simply being present enough to connect with the people around us. I released See You Shining before I could even play it. So I asked jazz pianist @sarah_tandy_piano one question: “Can you get me to a place where I can play one of my own songs?” About two hours later... ...I actually could. It’s funny how often we put things off because we think we should’ve started years ago.
