The clip is inspired in part by the 1984 science fiction novel, Neuromancer, by William Gibson. Set in a near-future dystopia, the story follows Case, a computer hacker enlisted by a powerful AI named Wintermute who wants to reunite with its AI counterpart, Neuromancer.

Terms such as cyberspace, and the matrix, were first coined by Gibson in this first of a 3-part trilogy known collectively as the Sprawl.
