Why is hip and groin mobility so important for acceleration?

Many athletes think mobility is just about touching your toes or preventing injuries.

For sprinters and jumpers, mobility is about putting your body in the right positions to produce force.

Limited hip and groin mobility can reduce stride efficiency, limit front-side mechanics, and make it harder to apply force into the ground during acceleration. Good mobility allows you to achieve better hip projection, maintain pelvic position, and move through a greater range of motion without compensations.

The goal isn’t to become the most flexible athlete—it’s to have enough mobility to sprint with efficient mechanics and produce more force every step.

Better positions lead to better movement. Better movement leads to more speed.

Fast athletes don’t spend less time on the ground. They use the ground better.

Every sprint step is an opportunity to produce force.

The athletes who are the fastest don’t try to “get off the ground.” They:

💥Strike the ground with stiffness through the ankle.
🏃Keep their hips tall and stable.
🦿Apply force down and back in the right direction.
📈Minimize wasted movement.

Ground contact at top speed lasts less than a tenth of a second.

The goal isn’t to rush the contact

it’s to produce as much force as possible while you’re on the ground.

Speed isn’t about avoiding the ground. It’s about mastering how you use it.

Speed doesn’t just come from your glutes.

Your adductors (groin muscles) are just as important—especially as you reach top speed.

They help:

🦿Pull the leg back underneath your body.
💀Stabilize the pelvis with every stride.
💥Transfer force efficiently from the ground into forward motion.
📈Contribute to powerful hip extension and front-side mechanics.

Weak or undertrained adductors don’t just increase injury risk, they can limit your sprint mechanics and reduce force production.

Strong groins don’t just prevent injuries. They help you run faster.

I’m incredibly grateful to USATF for the opportunity to serve as a Mentor Coach at the 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships (July 23–26). I’m especially honored to shadow Coach Petros Kyprianou, Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the University of Illinois, and learn from one of the best coaches in our sport.

Opportunities like this don’t happen by chance. They are built on the trust, hard work, and success of the athletes I’ve had the privilege to coach over the years. Their dedication has helped open doors like this, and I’m thankful to continue learning so I can bring even more knowledge and experience back to the athletes and programs I serve.

If strength isn’t enough, what actually makes you explosive?

💥Explosiveness is the ability to produce force quickly, especially during the first ~100 milliseconds of ground contact.

📶Maximal strength builds the foundation, but it doesn’t automatically transfer to speed.

To become explosive, athletes need:
 🏃High-velocity sprinting
 👣Plyometrics to improve tendon stiffness and elastic energy
 🏋️‍♂️Olympic lifts and ballistic movements
 ⬆️Medicine ball throws
 📈Reactive jumping
 👟Technical sprint mechanics and coordination

Strength is the foundation. Power is how fast you can use it.

“If strength alone made you fast, every powerlifter would be an elite sprinter.

Getting stronger is important—but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

Sprint performance depends on how quickly you can produce force, how efficiently you apply it into the ground, and how well your body coordinates every movement at top speed.

The strongest athlete isn’t always the fastest. The fastest athlete is the one who combines:
✅ Relative strength
✅ Explosive power
✅ Elasticity
✅ Technical efficiency
✅ Coordination

Strength builds the engine. Sprint mechanics determine how much of that engine reaches the track.

Train for force. Train for speed. Train for movement.

Efficient movement isn’t about looking perfect—it’s about directing force where it matters. Athletes who maintain posture, strike the ground beneath their center of mass, and minimize unnecessary movement produce more speed with less wasted energy.

Hip mobility isn’t about becoming more flexible—it’s about giving your body access to the positions needed to produce force.

During sprinting and jumping, the hips must move through large ranges of motion while remaining stable. Limited hip mobility can alter pelvic position, reduce force application, shorten stride mechanics, and increase unnecessary stress on the knees and lower back.

Build mobility. Maintain stability. Move efficiently.

Better positions lead to better performance.

It takes high-level coordination to produce massive force and maintain it for extended periods of time. A lot of athletes can accelerate, but maintaining solid, consistent ground contacts over longer distances is where mechanics tend to break down.

The Fix: Try adding wicket runs into the middle or the end of your longer sprints.

Why it works:

➡️ Forces Posture: Wickets give you external cues to keep your hips tall and mechanics sharp when fatigue tries to pull you out of position.

➡️ Maintains Ground Contact: It teaches your brain and body how to strike the ground effectively and consistently, even at higher velocities.

➡️ Builds Endurance: You learn how to maintain top-end coordination for longer periods of time.

Mastering this doesn’t happen overnight. I literally did wicket runs 3 days a week for 3 years just to rewire my mechanics and learn how to run correctly. Trust the process.

🏃‍♂️ Why run wicket drills with a dowel overhead?

It’s not about sprinting with your arms overhead—it’s about teaching your body what good posture feels like.

The dowel helps athletes:
✅ Stay tall without leaning back
✅ Stack the ribs over the hips
✅ Keep the pelvis in a better position
✅ Strike the ground underneath the body instead of reaching
✅ Improve rhythm, balance, and stiffness through each step

The best drills don’t just make athletes tired—they provide feedback. When the body is in a better position, better sprint mechanics become much easier to repeat.

Train positions. Build rhythm. Then let the speed take over.
