Sunset Speaks:✨ I hate when people ask victims, “Why did you stay?” Because that question assumes abuse begins with a black eye. It doesn’t. Sometimes abuse begins with a sentence. A criticism. A manipulation. A lie. A slow erosion of your confidence until you no longer recognize the person staring back at you in the mirror. Psychological abuse is one of the most dangerous prisons because nobody can see the bars. There are no bruises to point to. No cast. No stitches. No visible scars. Just a mind that has been conditioned to doubt itself. To question itself. To blame itself. That’s why so many survivors say the hardest battle wasn’t escaping the person. It was escaping the version of themselves that person convinced them they were. And that’s what struck me about Fyre Redd’s story. She talked about blaming herself. Questioning herself. Questioning her worth. And if you’ve never experienced psychological abuse, you may not understand how devastating that is. Because when someone destroys your self-worth, they don’t just take your confidence. They take your compass. And now you’re trying to navigate life while doubting every instinct you have. That’s why I wish people would replace “Why did you stay?” with “What happened to make you believe you had to?” Those are two very different questions. One blames. The other understands.
