Okay. Here it is. I had an abortion. I wrote a poem about it. Then, I told those that are close to me. And now, I am telling everyone. The first time I read this poem for anyone was for my sister, Claire. I said it out loud, and I felt a little bit lighter. I could tell you I never thought this would happen to me, that I never thought I would make this choice. I could tell you I was safe. I could tell you it was hard, it was lonely. I could tell you that I would choose to do it again, and that the choice is everything. But the truth is, there is probably nothing I can say that would change your mind on this issue. My hope is that my words will give you pause—to consider, to listen, to imagine someone else’s experience complexly before you judge it. And for those who know this particular choice, I hope you know that you are not alone. Nowhere near it. To the women that helped me make this video, and to the women that made me: thank you. Hi! Ok one time I had to do this weird commercial self tape where the only instructions were to “laugh on camera for 30 seconds”. I didn’t particularly feel like laughing before I filmed this. Actually I felt like crying! And cry I did! Because life is hard! And trying to prove that you are enough is exhausting. But here is me faking it. I faked it until I was exhausted and then I went to sleep and sometimes that’s just how it goes. But now here I am on Instagram sharing it with all of you because I am making a concerted effort to be the truest version of me. And I am mushy and squishy and tough and filled to the brim with feeling and EFFORT and am working on being cool with not being effortlessly cool. And I like my laugh! Even when it’s a lie! Thanks for bein’ pals!

Here’s a little excerpt from this thing we did last night. For my abuela, one of the strongest and bravest people I know. When I told her I was doing a benefit for PR, she asked if I was singing the Puerto Rico song with Marc Anthony and J-Lo. ( thanks @linmanham ) And while this is not quite that, to know that she believes I am already a star, that she trusts I can “make it” and already have, living out in Nueva York and following my dreams, gives me all the confidence to keep dreaming bigger. #gracias #wepa #artistsunitedforpr
