On this day 32 years ago, the world lost former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who died in New York at the age of 64 after a battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. John addressed the crowd outside his mother’s apartment on May 20, 1994: “Last night at around 10:15, my mother passed on. She was surrounded by her friends and her family and her books... the people and the things that she loved, and she did it in her own way, and in her own terms.... We all feel lucky for that, and now she’s in God’s hands.”

Following her death, John told his friends “You don’t really grow up until both of your parents are gone.”

Her legacy, grace, strength and elegance continues to inspire generations. Rest in peace to an icon 🕊️

In late July 1997, John flew to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to attend the weeklong Experimental Aircraft Association show with J. “Mac” McClellan, editor of Flying Magazine. John was delighted to meet the editor of his favorite magazine, also published by Hachette. According to many reports, he had a spectacular week, flying with the legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager in a P-51 and going up in a B-17 as well. By the time he headed home, he was determined to renew his commitment to learning to fly. “I’m not coming back here until I can fly myself,” he said as he left.

Although the Kennedy dynasty’s roots are deep in Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy Jr. himself was the quintessential New Yorker. Kennedy was not a New Yorker by birth, but the city had him in its grip. He glided through its intersecting circles of high-octane fashion, journalism, charity and sports. After his death, many ordinary New Yorkers also recalled him as one of their own.

“He was a very passionate New Yorker,” said Rose Anna de Maria, his former boss. “John would say that most cities are a noun, but New York is a verb.” 🗽

On May 14, 1998, JFK Jr made a surprise, top-secret appearance as the “Mystery Guest” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote George Magazine.

The show’s producer Dave Berg shared some of his memories of this special episode: “When John called me for our pre-interview, he seemed excited about his upcoming guest spot. Then I took a deep breath and told him Jerry would be first out. There was a long pause-maybe the longest in my life. All I could think was: Oh no, l’ve lost him. I’ve lost John Kennedy Jr. Then he broke the silence: “Do you think I’m good enough to follow Jerry Seinfeld?” I wasn’t sure if he was serious. His voice sounded sincere. So I asked, “Are you kidding me?” He assured me he meant it. He didn’t understand why anyone would want to watch him after seeing Jerry reminisce about one of the most beloved shows in the history of television. RoseMarie had warned me he was a humble guy, but I never expected this.

When Jay finally introduced the “mystery guest” and John walked out on stage, the studio audience immediately shot to its feet and let out a thunderous applause. He was incredibly handsome, even by Hollywood standards, and women were screaming, including my wife and five of her friends, who were aware he would be coming out. John was visibly surprised by the raucous reception. I could see him mouth the word Wow! When he sat down between Jay and Jerry, he admitted he was feeling overwhelmed: “I gotta tell you... my judgment in following Mr. Seinfeld on the biggest night in television... they always tell you in politics you gotta watch who you follow, so I don’t know what I was thinking.”

The show was enormously successful, drawing fifteen million viewers, the third-largest audience in its history. I believe John put on the best guest performance I’ve ever seen on The Tonight Show. He was my favorite guest, and Jay’s, too. Not bad for a guy who was so afraid he would bomb that he almost cancelled his appearance. Without question, the Seinfeld finale and Jerry’s outstanding appearance helped drive the numbers, but it was John who made the show truly memorable.”

“John hosted a six-part documentary, Heart of the City, on New York City’s unsung heroes, and while he basically had an open invitation to appear on network TV any time he’d like, he opted for the local PBS station instead. It was his way of giving back to his adopted city. The documentary served two purposes: it allowed John to brag about the city he loved while also gaining more experience in front of the camera.” - Michael Berman.

In 1988, Ted Kennedy asked John to introduce him at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. John was apprehensive but could not say no, so Michael Berman enlisted a media coach named Michael Sheehan to train John for his briet speech. Sheehan recalled seeing John enter the media training room escorted by Teddy, and he was stunned by how handsome John was.

Sheehan described John as cooperative and eager to learn but not especially happy to be present. “It was like he had to ski down a very dangerous hill,” Sheehan reflected. “He did not want to be there, but he did not want to disappoint his uncle.”

On the day of his speech, John was pacing around backstage with Andrew Cuomo, the thirty-year-old son of the governor of New York, Mario Cuomo, and his friend Jeffrey Sachs. Both were helping him with his delivery. John was supposed to cut his long hair before appearing on national television, but he was so nervous that he and Cuomo went running on the roof of the convention center in hundred-degree heat. By the time he returned, no time remained for him to get his hair cut.

“Paul was giving away all his money through Newman’s Own and he and John did the award together for two years, ‘98 and ’99. Before the ‘99 event, we wanted to make a video of the two of them and Paul said, “What if we do St. John and St. Paul as fallen angels? We’ve come back from the heavens to present these awards.” Paul’s humor.

I got the angel wings from the Broadway show Angels in America. One morning my phone rings and it’s John. He says, “Tim, I’m not doing the angel wings.” I had made really crappy halos out of wire and tinfoil, so they both did the halo. We filmed it at Paul and Joanne’s apartment. John lived his life burdened by a myth, but he never allowed that myth to define him or dictate the choices he made. People wanted John to fulfill his father’s legacy, but he wanted to find his own identity separate from that of his family. It wasn’t easy being John, but he carried his burden with such enormous grace.
