This sculpture uses the intertwined strands of the double helix to explore shared origins, migration, and connection.
The rungs of the helix hold words first formed in wax and then cast in metal. They echo the theme of my poem that travels up the adjacent stairs, Mind’s Eye, a reflection on leaving home .

DNA helix carries genetic information from one generation to the next. This helix carries something different: the shared human experience of immigration. Instead of inherited traits, it holds words that interpret land, home, and community in the many languages spoken at the site. The sculpture celebrates the community through the languages of the residents: English, Vietnamese, Khmer, Korean, Somali, Russian, and Lushootseed., a gesture of shared belonging.

I was thrilled with the warm reception given by the residents immediately upon installation. It makes the long process worthwhile.
