Chris Cortez discusses her work at the @futurefairs artist panel #nycartweek

BolsterArts (New York, NY) presents Chris Cortez, a Mexican artist based in New York whose “Bajo la Misma Luna” series of sky paintings is derived from an ongoing archive of photographs she collects while traveling to her family hometown, Joaquín Camaño, Mexico. Cortez’s restraint, light suspended, time stalled, invokes longing and nostalgia without collapsing into sentimentality. The clouds pull against the sky as light breaks through, a threshold, a moment just before something happens or just after it has passed. Referencing the film “Bajo la Misma Luna”, Cortez frames the sky as a tether, a shared structure we can look to when care is stretched across borders.

THESTYLEGUYDE Presents Bajo la Misma Luna by Chris Cortez - a series of paintings powerfully representing Queer & Trans people @ScopeArtShow Booth C007

Sunday 01/07 3PM Join Curator Steve Galindo and Artist Chris Cortez on the mainstage in discussing the oil paintings that illuminate self love and exploration.

Bajo la Misma Luna by Chris Cortez is a collection of portraits as a reflection of the artist’s ongoing journey to understand their place in this world. In this body of work, the canvas is the playground in which Mexican and Queer identities freely exist, as they were always at odds in their upbringing.

Honoring the art of transformation—she renders romantic dreamscapes that connect the self to our atmosphere, bridging the gap between past, present, future and fantasy.

Honoring roots as an individual framework to challenge the system that insists on restrictive and binary expectations and the legacy of Queer, Trans, Latina icons going against all odds to live as their glamorous authentic unapologetic selves. “In the form of the sky, we are the radiant light beaming through the somber clouds. It’s a continuous cycle of being visibly unique and aiming for a spark in a soul. My work celebrates the beautiful fluidity of human identity and the collective strength we share in this life.”

Artist Chris Cortez drew portraits of four people who discussed being incarcerated while trans for an audio essay by our reporter @bethtmp. The portraits show how they would want to be seen if they had more agency over their appearance.

🔗 Take a closer look at the portraits & listen to Willow, Ronnie, Reiyn and April in their own words at the link in our bio.

Transcript:
CHRIS VAZQUEZ: Trans people in U.S. prisons often have little control over their appearance. My coworker spoke with four incarcerated people about their experiences, and then The Marshall Project commissioned artist Chris Cortez to draw them as they would want to be seen.

CHRIS CORTEZ: They were kind of symbolic of passport photos…. I feel like that’s also something that’s just very affirming…when they get that license photo that finally reflects what it is that they’re feeling in themselves. So Ronnie was talking about wanting to have a vest, a button-up shirt…. Willow…wanted this young but also, like, sophisticated look…. Specifically for trans individuals, I feel like there comes a part where you’re getting in touch with who you wanted to be when you were younger…. Reiyn was the one that just wanted, like, standard photo…. April used to do pageants…and I kind of did this as a mix of, like, day to day with still some of that pageant beauty…. When I was essentially finished…I kind of just got emotional…. These are things that they would want…in their reach, and the powers that be aren’t allowing that to be possible.
