🎓 What will the Class of 2026 take with them from MIT SA+P?

As part of this year’s Commencement celebration, graduating students reflected on what they will carry forward — while faculty shared what they hope will stay with them long after leaving MIT.

During the ceremony, Dean Hashim Sarkis described the class with a quality that surfaced again and again across the school: big-heartedness. Big-hearted in the way they approached each other, their work, and the world around them.

And perhaps that is what this place hopes to cultivate most: “excellence in the service of humanity.”

When the power goes out on the big electric grid, standalone “microgrids” can help businesses, neighborhoods, and towns keep the lights on. 💡 Prof. David Hsu of @mitdusp tells us how communities around the world (including MIT!) are powering up microgrids in order to keep electricity flowing, even when the larger grid goes dark.

$Living Heritage Atlas | Beirut is a design-based research project that documents and maps Beirut’s living heritage of craftsmanship — through its craftspeople, public spaces, and local knowledge. The Move MIT, an initiative started in 2017 by DUSP Professor Ceasar McDowell, is officially renaming to We Who Engage!

The Move was started as a movement to transform our democracy’s civic engagement infrastructure. Motivated by the belief that democracy in America has not been designed to manage the tensions that come with inclusive public conversations, The Move sought to nurture spaces and institutions needed for our demographically complex public to come into meaningful dialogue with one another.

Sharing stories and voices has been a long-standing theme of The Move’s work, beginning with two seasons of a podcast, community events, and a blog series on Medium. The Move’s work grew to support Professor’s McDowell’s question campaign, America’s Path Forward (@apf_official), and several Instagram initiatives: We Who Engage and We Who Engaged Instagram series profiling individual civic engagement experiences, and an Instagram Live Cast series, IG Inertia, featuring candid conversations about current events in our democracy.

This year, however, two pandemics - COVID-19 and structural racism - have cast these unjust foundations of our democracy even further into the spotlight. The resulting global protests and expressions of civic engagement might have also reaffirmed the need to build a more equitable democracy. This change must be led by We The People; we who demand, imagine, and enact change by transforming our civic engagement infrastructure; and we who hold our own unique histories, questions, and motivations that inspire us into dialogue and action.

By embracing a new name - We Who Engage - The Move hopes to to reflect these values and direction, and to unite past, current, and upcoming work under this name, and to explore narrative as a way to heal and rebuild our nation’s civic engagement infrastructure. We are looking forward to growing this work in community with you, as We Who Engage! #wewhoengage #americaspathforward

$What is group-equity cooperative housing? \\ "Among the many ways cities work towards affordable housing, group-equity coops are a powerful tool because they deliver affordable housing from the private sector," said #dusp’s Agustín Cepeda (MCP student and PKG Fellow). "Rather than view housing as a commodity that one lives in and also profits from, group-equity coops reject the idea that a home can be anyone’s property.
