Update: free for choreographic and teaching with from August!

Okay, here I will try to explain Speculative Somatics.

I must admit that I have been developing this practice since early childhood — as games of perception, but also as a survival strategy in a world wired for neuro-normativity.

It became my way of finding connection not through social interaction, but through the shared feeling of living matter. With the help of hyperfocus, precision, overstimulation, and deep sensory attention, perception games became perception research, and research became a way to transform difference into connection, and sensitivity into a way of knowing.

And here a more professionalized text:

Speculative Somatics is a body-based research method that invites participants to reimagine their physical form — tracing it back to an embryo and evolving it into another kind of being: a cat, an amphibian, or an entirely imaginary creature, texture, substance.

Through this process, the body becomes a speculative model — a way to question how sensation, regeneration, and collective life could unfold differently. On a political level, it asks what kinds of societies might grow from these alternative forms of existence.

By shifting sensory experience, Speculative Somatics opens the possibility to decentralize the human perspective and reconnect with living matter on a deeper, more elemental level.

The method can be used for personal exploration, movement research, and choreography, but also as a political and activist practice — to challenge normative ideas of the body, expand perception, and imagine other ways of being.

"Portrait in motion" is a self-presentation format we produced during our studies @hzt_berlin @hfs_ernst_busch

I almost forgot it existed, but our portraits had been shown yesterday during the exmatriculation, and I remembered

My portrait is a journal of matter staying airborne for some time until it settles

In this text, there is appreciation towards the inspirations, the team and the institutions that made #everyone_here_is_a_bit_of_a_horse possible.

Any team and any institution is not just structure.
There are living people making their best to support, to connect, to interact, to work, to be. Or just doing their thing, inspiring me do mine.

So, here comes my gratitude to all of you, who has been with me throughout the stages:

📰 The journalists of @takiedela.ru for an article about quadrobers and xenophobic violence against them. This was a starting point of my research.

🐈 The brave teenage quadrobics fighters against repressive bio-politics and hidden violence of civilisation.

📚 The authors of so many books, movies, series, dance pieces on how to become an animal. You have been my direct or indirect sources of inspiration throughout the research phase. Oxana Timofeeva with “Freud´s Beasty Boys” , Mayakovski with “Kindness to horses”, “American werewolf” etc.

🌁 The @hzt_berlin institution as a huge team, the @hfs_ernst_busch + the maC team and the former head of studies Wanda Golonka, my academic tutors Susanne Vincenz and Nik Haffner, other teachers Ingo Releucke and Christiane Berger, and the external mentor @isabelleschadofficial - for believing and supporting my decisions along the way. Questioning is also supporting by the way.

🤸‍♀️ The dancers team. My dears (fears) @b.bewegt @martameare and @m.csablanca

Fierce, sensitive, powerful, professional, hardworking, inspirational, but also standing for themselves and working conditions.

🧩 The artistic team in other media: @march_sister_march for sound (who jumped in really quickly and created a real living interactive sound space), Andreas for light (who supported and co-created the stage, and also gave possibility to play with the light desk!), @maria.faerberart who created the concept for stage and costumes, but also - did amazing masks onhand of quadrobics tutorials from scratch!

🎥 Thank you also @alenka.na.gorke for amazing camera work! There are so many more shots and photos I enjoy so much.

I am so blessed to have been able to work with you all.

In this post, I want to invite you to my 3-hour workshop “Somatics into choreography” in Hamburg.

Main questions:

👀
When:
27.07 from 15:00 till 18:00

👣
Where:
@bewegungsraum_in_der_fabrique in Gängeviertel (Valentinskamp 34a)

🍂
Fee:
40-60€ sliding scale

👥
Why these two fields?

Somatic and contemporary choreography were born at around the same time, on the verge of a new understanding of the body. But, as many twins, they have sometimes not so easy relationship, due to their sometimes different understanding what body is. The body as the process lived and perceived from within - versus body as the form created by this life.
I am both a choreographer and a somatic practitioner. I am inspired by somatic practice while generating the movement in each project. And I see strengths and depths that somatic practice brings into choreography. And want to share it.

In this 3-hour workshop, we are going to focus on only 2 of the somatic methods - Authentic Movement and BMC (specifically embryology) - and compose their practices into structures using various choreographic methods: instant composition, scores, framing of the audience gaze etc.

💃
Is there dance involved?

Definitely. In all the different senses of what dance is.

✋
Is there touch involved?

Yes, in both supporting the process of your partner(s) and dancing together.

🐎 Meet the Herd

Birte Opitz
@b.bewegt

Dancer | Feminist Self-Defense Trainer | Dance Researcher

We asked Birte three questions about her experience in this process:

1️⃣ What surprised you during the process of making this piece?

2️⃣ What score, movement, or body form will you take with you in your practice after finishing this project?

3️⃣ If your horse had a day job, what would it be?

Birte Opitz works at the intersection of contemporary dance, critical theory, and empowerment. Trained in Dramatic Play at HBK Braunschweig and dance at Tanzfabrik Berlin, she examines the political body through both stage and non-stage formats. Her academic background in Dance Studies spans FU Berlin, DOCH Stockholm, and Stockholm University.

As a feminist self-defense trainer, Birte fuses embodied resistance with collective agency. She performs in activist contexts, organizes with Actions Against Rape Culture, and is part of the queerfeminist collective Altes Finanzamt. She has collaborated with Florentina Holzinger, Turbo Pascal, and Peaches, and her work has been supported by Aktion Tanz, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, and Fonds Darstellende Künste.

⚪ From the choreographer:
In “Everyone here is a bit of a horse,” Birte brings a powerful and grounded presence that challenges body politics and opens up spaces of imagination and empowerment of taking space, being present, movement as action.

🎟 Premiere: June 13 & 14, Uferstudios Berlin

🐎 Meet the Herd

 Marcel Casablanca Martínez
@m.csablanca

Dancer | Choreographer | Performer

We asked Marcel three questions about his experience in the piece:

1️⃣ Who should see the piece and who shouldn’t - under any circumstances?

2️⃣ How would you describe "Everyone here is a bit of a horse" in three words?

3️⃣ What score, movement, or body form will you take with you in your practice after finishing this project?

Marcel Casablanca Martínez is a Barcelona-born contemporary dancer and choreographer, trained at Institut del Teatre and former member of IT Dansa. His professional journey has taken him across European stages, with performances at Konzert Theater Bern, Stadttheater Gießen, and six seasons at Mainfranken Theater.

Marcel’s choreographic voice has emerged through personal works including a site-specific piece at the Museum d’Arts Santa Mònica.

He’s collaborated with renowned choreographers like Dominique Dumais, Moritz Ostruchnjak, and Henrieta Horn, always navigating the tension between intellectual precision and emotional depth - an energy he resonates with in the art of Joana Vasconcelos.

⚪From the choreographer:
In “Everyone here is a bit of a horse,” Marcel brings his unique qualities: amazing dance technique, unexpected performative decisions, and his research on tempo.

Marta Ferraris
@martameare

Dancer | Teacher | Writer | Movement Researcher

We asked Marta four questions about her experience creating this piece:

1️⃣ What surprised you during the process of making this piece?

2️⃣ How would you describe Everyone here is a bit of a horse in three words?

3️⃣ What part of you is most visible in this work?

4️⃣ If your horse had a day job, what would it be?

Based in Berlin, Marta Ferraris is an Italian contemporary dancer with a multifaceted background - from classical ballet at Accademia Teatro alla Scala, to Oriental dance, contemporary choreography, movement research, and circus arts.

Her practice fosters inner creative empowerment and is shaped by dialectical contrasts, drawing inspiration from various gestural vocabularies. Marta’s focus is on bridging tradition and innovation while exploring the communicative and therapeutic power of dance.

From the choreographer:
In “Everyone here is a bit of a horse,” Marta brings her unique movement vocabulary, connecting acrobatics, partnering, and dance, and navigates between deep sensitivity and full power.

13.06. and 14.06
in Studio 1, @uferstudios_tanz_berlin

“This piece deals with the break happening when your warm and tender inner animal looks in the mirror and recognizes its own tormentor: a dog sees a leash, a horse sees a whip, a bird sees black through an oil film, a teenager sees a future adult.
This piece consist of things that purr, play, bite, enjoy, cry from pain, wrestle, threaten, die from poison, are criminalized, are treated, are treated badly.
This piece resists to become human, whatever forms it takes”.

With a team one can only dream of:

Sound-Design: @djloryn
Costume and Stage designer: @maria.faerberart
Light-Design: Andreas Harder
