I need to take a break. An hiatus, a breather, sit one out, you get the idea. I think I’m on double secret probation anyway! I couldn’t tell you why because I don’t know but isn’t that the way they want it? Anyhoo- this is from a few years back. “ Suspect Device “… oil on canvas 36x36” I sorta tweaked it just a bit! … catch ya in a little while!

So old, it’s new.. or sumthin like that! … when I’m outta money( not to mention canvas etc.) it’s time to check and see if I really did “ finish” those old works or just get them to the “ just about” stage. Sometimes it can be a slippery slope. Boredom and misjudgment about one’s own artwork can lead to some serious F-ing up of pretty good work. You know, that old familiarity breeds contempt thing! Sometimes if I’m too close or if I’ve been looking at something for way to long I might tend to get pretty down on my own work and that’s when that handy 2”brush might come to ill use and in a few misguided strokes, wipe out something that ultimately, you wish you hadn’t!!! I’ve done that many times in the past and more than likely, I’ll do it again in the future . However, on the other hand… sometimes you need to put something away or in “ time out” for a good while to see that , no, you hadn’t quite finished the piece but now you can see it! How to take it to its logical conclusion or whatever! Anyhoo, bla bla bla, this 24x40” , oil and collage on veneer plywood has had several different permentations ( or iterations , maybe) over the years and now,I just hauled it upstairs and gave it a fresh( probably last) howdayadoo! Oaky doaky then…( ps. There is a 2nd side to this which I meant to show a picture of here but forgot!)

Dancing on strings pulled by the man… or… one Big Brother or Another… 2 8x10” oil on canvas. ( an unintentional diptych ) these were originally done months apart and without thought about one for the other. One day I was just getting a little bit organized and placed them side by side and saw it!( whatever IT is, mind you) I immediately thought about that line from the Godfather about ( probably gonna butcher the Italian spelling here) the “ pissenavante”( piss ants) dancing on the strings held by some big shot. Anyhoo…

3 “ Color Poems” … the first two are finished and they are 30x30” and 18x18” respectively. Both are oil on canvas and started and finished this year. The third one is 48x60” and was originally “ finished” a few years ago but now is in the middle of a big overhaul or re-do! It’s is oil on canvas as well…. I call them “ color poems “ although I don’t think that’s exactly original. They are also what I call random design but I do get that that’s an oxymoron! I mean that they are impulsively started and gotten to the first stage very quickly and with little thought before working them further. I take minutes to make a mess than hours to try to clean it up!! I often paint myself into corners that way and you would have thought I’d have learned better by now but it always seems that if there is an easy way, I take the hard way!! Not on purpose, mind you!! I admire painters that put a lot of forethought into their work. That doesn’t seem to work out real well for me though. I get to the pulling out my hair stage way too easily if I “ try” to paint something!!

FAa-KEe Records is up and running and a going concern,as they say!! Stop by Big Fun Records in the somewhat attractive Downtown of Beverly Ma which is on the Beautiful North Shore coastline of Eastern Massachusetts ( Boston being the dividing line between North and South shores! )Breath in the rich history and smell the old sea chests and, uhh, well never mind all that crap!! Just check out these FAa-KEe releases! Yes, they’re on the top shelf for a reason!! They’re just that good!!… plus some ephemera, here and there! Up all of May!! It’s Big Fun for the whole Family!! By now….

You won’t see all of this if you drop by Big Fun Records in May but you’ll definitely see some of it!! I want to Mention my good Friend and one of my favorite painters Elizabeth Fox because I borrowed that fabulous little party scene from one of her old postcards for the FAa-KEe Records compilation album! I tried bunches of other stuff but just kept coming back to that one and couldn’t resist!! Cheers!

Still trying to figure this stuff out! Tech is not my strong suit! ANYHOO… these pictures all stored in my cellar now. They have a couple things in common. They are all pretty old and they are all painted on wood or plywood! Most were originally painted in acrylic and acrylic house paint but a few have been re-painted in oil. Several ( shown here) have pictures on both sides…sorry the music cuts out but that’s me! Mr 19th century, Jonny Luddite!!

I’m on day 2 of a massive cellar ( or basement) reorganization , mostly so I can store my canvases which have taken over my entire apartment like the creeping terror they are! …as far as storing art in a basement, I’ve learned some hard lessons the hard way! So I went out and procured some pallets to elevate them from the occasional 9-10 year event of filling up with water.( it’s usually dry but if conditions are just so…) also I found a nice way to recycle those brown paper grocery bags we’re all using these days, which keeps the canvases from rubbing into each other! Finally, I have enough plastic to cover everything when all is said and done and protect them from the plumbing overhead and the rusty old cast iron pipes!.. I hope! Note*.. some of the art that you can see is very old and on plywood or composite substrates from back when I painted down there with acrylic and house paints! I think I was into surrealistic minimalism or some such thing back then,(20+ years ago) but who can remember!
