Homo Lüdens: Jacquard II is out.

Proud of this work and thankful for the beautiful team that made it possible.

Just as a child plays seriously, artists play as if the world depended on that.

Johan Huizinga writes:

“Play is not ordinary life or life as such. It consists of stepping out of it into a temporary sphere of activity with a disposition all of its own.
At any moment, play can wholly absorb the player.
Play is an intermezzo in everyday life. It adorns life, enriches it, and is indispensable to both the individual, as a biological function, and to the community, for the meaning it carries, its expressive value, and the spiritual and social bonds it creates—as a cultural function.”

On July 7, we premiere a new Homo Lüdens video.

This is the second session filmed at the beautiful @espai_jacquard

Let us continue playing with the pieces and the board that have been entrusted to us. Let us explore the boundaries of what we believe ourselves to be.

Peace

Olec

Homo Lüdens: Jacquard I

Human beings, above all, play. From the magic circle of play emerge poetry, law, cultural conventions, and the values that sustain our lives. Play opens a free and consecrated space, governed by rules that we willingly accept and within which anything can happen. There arise tension, enthusiasm, risk, and wonder. Play is self-sufficient; it begins and ends within its own time. Play, one might say, is a serious matter.
Few expressions are as playful as music and poetry. They are fertile territories of possibility, ways of imagining and creating what does not yet exist, ways of preserving spontaneity and curiosity in the face of the mystery of being alive.
Homo Lüdens proposes inhabiting such a space for a limited time. To create freely through improvisation and listening, guided by almost invisible rules. To enchant those who listen and intoxicate them with presence. To remind ourselves that if play is a magical parenthesis within ordinary life, perhaps life itself is a magical parenthesis: a single point floating in mysterious eternity.

This is the first of (hopefully) many Homo Lüdens sessions, electronic spontaneous creation.

This first session was recorded in the beautiful @espai_jacquard , an artist studio in Sabadell, ran by @pau.bonet and @anaehlis.kunst

🇬🇧
We tend to think that of play as the opposite of seriousness, yet play can be a deeply serious matter.

Seguimos!

The thing with “neo-classical” music made for playlists is that it often leaves no room for discomfort — as if life itself didn’t contain it.

As if removing a thorn were painless.
As if healing the heart did not hurt.
As if giving birth were not an act of suffering and transformation.

It is within the tensions of life that our humanity reveals itself — and also our capacity to transcend it.

To integrate tension in music is to learn how to inhabit the beauty of uncertainty: that state of not fully knowing what all of this is, and yet surrendering to it completely.

To contemplate the beauty within discomfort expands us. It enlarges the vessel of consciousness.

We should not allow the industry to take that away from art.
Because if that happens, we may be far more lost than we think.

Artists are highly sensitive people reporting back to the group what reality is like for them.
Artists minds are more porous than the average.
Their role is to receive information from the broader dimension of mind into our collective mind.
Because the artist mind is more porous, they live in the edge of functionality.
This is the price artists pay for their creativity.
As their minds are more fluid porous and expanded, they often struggle with life.
Being an artist is a sacrifice.
They sacrifice themselves for the sake of accessing these deeper regions of the mind and make them available for the rest of humanity.

When you open to the idea that everything is music (at least as an exercise) things can get really interesting.

The word “risk” comes a lot to me lately while I am playing and exploring. Artists are often faced with this question.
How much risk is there in the micro- aesthetic decisions you take?

Whenever the world organizes itself around war and apocalyptic tragedy, artists are faced with a particular challenge.

By now, I’ve lived through several of these moments, and they seem to come faster each time.

The first challenge is distraction. Images take over. Information overflows. The algorithm does its work.

Then comes guilt.

People living through hell, and here I am, sitting at my piano, searching for beauty. What should I be doing? Where should my attention be?

But if one stays long enough, if the mind quiets and the heart begins to open, something else appears.

It is in moments like these that music must sound louder.

Not because of music itself, but because of what it reveals. It reminds us of something simple: we are not separate.

Evil separates. Good unites.

Music, when it is true, belongs to that movement.

It has saved me many times. Not as an idea, but as an opening — a crack through which light could enter.

If it separates, it is not music. If it unites, it is.

And that is the music we must keep playing.

To be a musician — an artist, a human being — is to remain with that task. To stay with it. To trust that it matters.

Peace,
Olec
