A throwback Thursday post to one of the coolest wildlife encounters I’ve ever had. I was driving along a canal road when I saw a mule deer doe giving birth to a fawn on the hill above the canal. As the doe was cleaning off the newborn fawn, she started delivering a second fawn. She moved a few steps away to drop the second fawn and the first one tried to stand up. It immediately lost its balance and rolled down the hill towards the canal. I wasn’t going to be ok with letting the fawn drown if it survived the roll down the hill so I found a place where I could cross the canal and I went looking for it. The doe was now up top cleaning off the second fawn. I found the fawn that fell and it was a tangled mess. Sticks had kept it from falling in the creek but it was all tangled up in sticks and couldn’t move. I moved a bunch of sticks away from the fawn and it attempted to stand. After about 10 minutes it made it to its feet. It now had imprinted on me and thought I was a family member. I didn’t want to touch it so I backed up slowly up the hill with it following me to the top. Once on top the hill it laid down. I could see the doe with the other fawn so I slowly backed up and left. A couple hours later I went back to check on them and the doe and two fawns were all resting together. It was a crazy encounter I will never forget.

I saw my first white-tailed deer fawn of the year on Monday morning. It was the earliest fawn I had ever seen. The last week of May is when I usually start seeing fawns. This fawn was laying right next to the road and the way the doe that was with was acting, I figured there might be a fawn there. The doe walked off over a small hill and when I looked back I saw the fawn’s ear twitch. I took a few photos and then the doe gave out a blow and the fawn ran after it. There should be lots of fawns showing up over the next several weeks.

Two big velvet bull elk feeding in the high country last July. The big bull in front was hit and killed by a vehicle last fall. He was an awesome bull.
