Safari Zone is such a vibe honestly. No battling allowed, just you sneaking around with bait and rocks trying not to waste your last Safari Ball. Half the fun is realizing you have no idea what you’re doing until you somehow catch a Tauros by pure luck. This whole area is one of the more unique parts of the Kanto region, and it’s home to Pokemon you genuinely cannot find anywhere else in FireRed and LeafGreen. Eeveelutions already had range. Then Delta Species gave them a plot twist. Same evolutions, same Eevee lineage, but paired with a Metal secondary type. I love the Delta Eeveelutions from the Holon era! Cycling Road tested your patience and Route 12 tested your PokeFlute skills 😂 The bike stayed mandatory for that whole stretch — steep road, endless trainers, and somehow still one of the more memorable parts of Kanto to bike through. Then Route 12 delivered the moment everyone remembers: a Snorlax blocking the entire path, dead asleep, completely unbothered by the chaos it caused. Waking it up with the PokeFlute wasn’t just a puzzle gate. It felt like an event. One of the first real “wait, I actually get to catch this” moments in FireRed and LeafGreen. Most Pokémon card collectors have a set they keep coming back to. Mine kept leading me back to the same illustrator: Tomokazu Komiya. There’s nothing restrained about his work. The colour is dense and psychedelic, layered in a way that rewards a second look and a third. Backgrounds that feel like they’re operating on their own logic. Pokemon rendered not as subjects but as centrepieces in something stranger and bigger than the card frame. Pulling a full masterset of his illustration together in one binder made this even clearer. Erika’s gym felt like a breather — grass types, a calm garden setting, gameplay that didn’t punish you the way Surge’s puzzle did. Then Lavender Town happened. The music alone did more work than any cutscene. Pokemon Tower, the ghosts blocking the stairs, Mr. Fuji trapped by Team Rocket, and Cubone’s story that hit different once you were old enough to actually understand it 😭 This part of the Pokemon binder covers that shift — Celadon’s calm into Lavender’s unease, back to back. Nobody warned you that Pokemon card collecting would turn into a whole thing. One binder became three. You’re researching illustrators at midnight, looking up holo patterns like it’s a whole science, and somehow you know more about vintage sets than half the TCGplayer listings you scroll through. You started out just wanting to relive Kanto. Now you’ve got a masterset in progress, a soft spot for WOTC-era artwork, and strong feelings about which is the best EX era set. Somewhere a ten year old version of you, hunched over a Base Set booster pack, is absolutely losing it. Turns out the collector phase never really ends — it just gets a bigger binder.
