Garden Reflexxx’s haunting and hilarious debut feature Grape Steak will have an encore session at Overshare Video Festival next Tuesday Oct 17th at 7pm! From its NYC debut at Spectacle Theater: “Bridget Jones Diary inside Blair Witch Project set in The Zone” -Garden Reflexxx Shot over the course of five years using a variety of formats—Arri Amira, iPhone, Sony Handycam, JVC Everio, Sony NX200 and 35mm scratch—GRAPE STEAK is a patchwork portrait of Sydney’s queer community. As the debut feature of queerdomediamakers Jen Atherton and Andre Shannon—collectively known as Garden Reflexxx—it relishes in their stylistic flourishes, mixing a discomforting but hilarious wryness with a brazen commitment to reinvent the film’s form as it unspools. In many ways, the film’s endless transformations speak to its making, which involved a variety of agents willing to work collectively in opposition to the dominant cinema of Australia. As far as plot goes, GRAPE STEAK concerns two friends who encounter someone who’s been gay bashed and the rumors circulating the infamous site of said bashing. The film shifts perspectives as audiences are tasked with figuring out its catalyzing mystery. As it spins through various cycles of humor and horror while music by NYC stars Macy Rodman and Magda plays, GRAPE STEAK mines the always-tantalizing relationship between eros and death. The end result is a sprawling mosaic as intoxicating as it is impressive.

She’ll be at Testing Grounds Emporium in person for a studio date designed to kit you out with VHS wearables. We’ll be breaking open cassettes, and wrapping bodies in tape to build what she calls ‘video armour’.

Artificial Memory: A Twist of Reality is drawing from the scientific background of Dr Didi Chi, and the curatorial experience of Yuzhen Cheng. This art experiment proposes to process still and moving images from Didi’s personal archive using the methodical algorithms of medical imaging production. Featuring video, film, Polaroids, and artistic recreations of photography and medical imaging using 'Fourier transform' and other techniques. On until 5 August at Testing Grounds Emporium, 432-438 Queen Street, Melbourne.

In public: Experiment / Think / Collaborate / Test / Collect / Run / Talk / Cook / Develop / Share / Dance / Gather / Learn / Mark / Make Calling for Public Art Park '23 participants! This year's program includes a six-week lab (7 August - 22 September) culminating in a two-week public program during Melbourne Fringe Festival (7 - 22 October). Testing Grounds is located at Market Square within the Queen Victoria Market Precinct. We're looking for contextually-led ideas for public spaces across any medium and duration. Individuals, collectives, students and practitioners from diverse creative fields are all encouraged to apply. Let us know you're interested in being part of the program by submitting a simple application outlining your practice, interests and initial ideas about working in public space and the market precinct, as well as your availability to participate in the program. Every Wednesday and Thursday at Testing Grounds Emporium, @lukemacaronas performance work 'This Is My Body' This is My Body is a participatory queer ritual that traces the history of the Eucharist in order to uncover the erotic, subversive and sacred meanings of breaking bread and drinking flesh and blood. Part-theatre, part-dance, part-ceremony, this show cracks open a pandora's box of orgiastic rites and disordered feasting that lies just beneath the veneer of the world's largest religion. It is an experiment in turning food into flesh and flesh into food that promises to be different every night. Performed by Luke Macaronas, written and devised in collaboration with Sar Fegan, and with mentorship by Joel Bray, this premier of This is My Body is presented at Testing Grounds in Melbourne.
