Gag grouper is a popular sport fish in the Gulf, but they are currently overfished 🎣

Researchers at the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science, in collaboration with the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, have developed a flexible tool to enhance recreational fisheries management. 

Using data collected since 2015, the researchers trained a model that accounts for angler behavior and regulatory changes. This model will help inform decisions regarding the length of fishing seasons based on the risk of exceeding quotas.

Every two months for the past decade, researchers from the USF College of Marine Science head to sea, collecting critical data to track the health of South Florida’s coastal water for the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network. 

The cruises are part of the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration, a NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory project that began in 1998 to investigate coral bleaching in the Florida Keys. The science has expanded in scope, length, and partnerships, and now includes University of Miami Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Mote Marine Lab, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

🐚What can tiny, fragile shells tell us about past climates? A whole lot, according to Felipe Stanchak, CMS graduate student. Felipe studies foraminifera, small, calcareous shelled organisms that lived millions of years ago - as well as present day! When these foraminifera build their shell, they take in carbon and oxygen from the surrounding seawater. By sifting through old sediment cores, researchers can find these foraminifera and use them to understand the oceanic and atmospheric conditions they were formed in.

What is sound speed – and why does it matter for mapping the seafloor? 

Watch this video from Florida High Tech Corridor intern and USF undergraduate student, Grace Angeli, as she uses stop-motion animation to explain her research, which combines multibeam sonar with sound speed corrections to create detailed maps of the seafloor.

A seafloor mapping project is making waves in Tampa Bay! 🌊 

Researchers from the Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies (COMIT) at the College of Marine Science have gathered new seafloor data through a program called Crowd the Bay. This initiative engages the local boating community to crowdsource bathymetry data that helps map Tampa Bay. 

Partners have included Eckerd College, U.S. Geological Survey, Pinellas County Environmental Management, Chance Maritime, Ballyhoo Media, and local private citizens with personal vessels.

USF students — applications are open!

For the third consecutive year, the @usfmarinescience is offering research internships through the @floridahightech Undergraduate Research Initiative!

Sophomores, juniors, and seniors can apply to one of four exciting projects:

🔹 Tampa Bay Surveillance (TBS) – Assist with lab-based marine invertebrate contaminant and image analysis.

🔹 Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies (COMIT) – Analyze bathymetry data from the Crowd the Bay citizen science mapping initiative using ArcGIS Pro and Pydro Explorer.

🔹 IMaRS + Ocean Circulation Lab (OCL) – Support shipboard and lab research on circulation and connectivity in Rice’s Whale habitat.

🔹 TBON + OCL – Deploy and service water quality monitoring sondes, perform lab calibration, and sample chlorophyll-a.

📅 Applications are due December 1, 2025.

Last week, we celebrated the retirement of Joe Donnelly, our longtime facilities manager at the College of Marine Science. Over more than 40 years of dedicated service, Joe has played a crucial role in keeping CMS operations running smoothly. Whether it was recovering from hurricanes or addressing locked office doors, Joe has always worked tirelessly to resolve any issues that arise. 

The CMS community is incredibly grateful for all the effort and hard work Joe has contributed to the college, and his presence will be deeply missed. 

We are excited for Joe as he embarks on his next journey in upstate New York, and we wish him all the best!

At the University of South Florida’s College of Marine Science, Professor Steve Murawski and his team are engaged in a five-year study called the Tampa Bay Surveillance project to investigate contaminants and promote the health of the bay. 

The contaminants in question include chemical compounds from lawns, pharmaceuticals, and so-called “forever chemicals”— PFAS — which are found in everyday products such as plastic bags and non-stick cookware.

Murawski and his team are sampling barnacles, oysters, fishes, water, and sediments to asses the concentration of these chemicals around the bay.

📢 Introducing TBS! 🌊✨

We’ve been hard at work studying Tampa Bay’s waters, from legacy chemicals like PCBs & DDT to emerging threats like PFAS and pharmaceuticals.

Through The Tampa Bay Surveillance Project (TBS) and companion efforts Barnacle Baseline and Tampa Bay REACH (Regional Estuary Assessment of Community Health), we’re taking a multidisciplinary approach to investigating contaminants and assessing their impacts on both human and environmental health.

When Hurricane Ian rapidly strengthened over the West Florida Shelf, researchers were surprised. Shallow waters in this region are usually too well-mixed to retain enough heat to fuel storms. 

But a new study suggests a possible explanation: the Loop Current and its interaction with a unique ‘pressure point’ in the Gulf of Mexico. 

When the Loop Current interacts with this pressure point, it causes upwelling, or a flushing of cold water to the surface, an event which the USF College of Marine Science Ocean Circulation Lab says did not happen before Hurricane Ian. 

This left the waters warmer than average, providing fuel for Ian as it neared the coast.
