In Honour of the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Red Dress Day, May 5th., 2022 — Red Dress Day started in 2010 as an offshoot of a project by Métis artist Jamie Black. ^^SOUND ON • How do we practice, discover, and regain our body’s internal rhythm? After all, we are symbolic species. We are so connected by rhythm that community is a reparative factor. It starts in utero where there are non-stop signals that say: hey, you are regulated! In utero you’re getting at least three different rhythms: heart beating, pulse tapping, synchronization. And all this is getting perceived by the developing brain that rhythm is important, rhythm is regulation.
•
As we develop it becomes about attunement and what we do in a space with others and how we relate to our Self in that space.
 •
Dr. Bruce Perry, the American psychiatrist and renowned trauma researcher, said it best “the meaning that you create is drawn from the people you are engaged with”
•
From utero to coming together in bilateral movement and creating sound & vibes: clapping, tapping, drumming, singing, humming; listening; story-telling; expressive arts; interoception, exteroception, and proprioception awareness ~ these are all what our elders and their ancestors have taught us. And from cross-cultures to the sciences, there’s agreement: discovering your hum, regaining your rhythm, moving together = heals.

Creative Connection • Repost from @traumasensitiveyogawest

We are wired for connection!

Meet my sweet 1 legged bird who lives in an adapted cage, free to engage and retreat as he needs, and thrives on connection. Every morning I come up the stairs and he runs out onto his cage door to have a chat, preen with me, and connect...and it brings me joy every time!

We are herd animals. To know ourselves, we need to be with others...to have opportunities to attune and find a common rhythm of connection.

The experience of mirroring between me and this little feathered wonder supports us both to feel seen. Mirroring happens between humans, as well with the non human world...we all carry spirit, we all have nervous systems or an intelligence that needs relationship in order to live and thrive.

If we’ve gone out for a few hours, as soon as we enter the house, the bird calls out to connect in his way, to let us know he’s here and excited to see us. He sings when there’s noise in the kitchen, reverbing and vibing with his attunement of sound. There are so many ways he shows me how connection with life, being seen, or feeling heard might look...and how that experience impacts his being.

Consider moments in your day of connection! I notice moments when I’m out for a walk and I wave and say hello to a stranger and receive that response in return - a beautiful gift of serve and return. They’re small moments which have a big impact through these times!
