Remarkably, you can get a 2022 vintage of this at a lovely restaurant I've been to in Mâcon for €450 🤯

A couple of months ago I made a reel of London restaurants serving DRC under £1,000. I cautioned it won't stay that way. Today I can't find any under £1,000 anymore.

I know people look at investment grade indexes for wine appreciation (Liv-Ex). That doesn't work for restaurants, it's a different ball game of supply, demand, markups. That's why I knew the DRC price would appreciate drastically in London.

Quick post found someone enjoying Alsace rieslings I recommend Kreydenweiss and Clos du Val d'Éléon I visited in July.

Unfiltered high acid unhinged. Bear in mind I tried the Clos St Hunes and Frederic Emiles and Deisses and Weinbachs and this was 🚀

Found one on NYC wine lists and for that price it's p. great, you can do so much worse in NYC

if you want info on where to find specific wines like these see bio

Plot twist: I built the solution. The free (and only?) wine list checker is now available online. Google for "greenlight wine list checker"

Somms: Try it and see if it helps you. Producers deserve to have their names spelled correctly on your lists ❤️

Competition update: After 30+ days it turns out nobody is able to verify a clean list. Basically every list has issues. "Chardonay" on Michelin listed restaurants 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ 🤦‍♂️

Realized this is so broken it needed a better solution - so I built one. The competition is now closed because checking lists is actually easy now.

2020 Diel Nahesteiner Riesling Kabinett, Nahe, Germany 🇩🇪
@schlossgut_diel

If folks were more open to how well these wines "work" there'd be a lot more of them on wine lists 🥲

This was the only Kabi / off-dry one at my local place (and still so representative and yummy and amazing QPR). Maybe the tides will change with more awareness!

-- Geek notes --

Notes: Med+ to high intensity (in contrast with Mosel / Saar which is less intense typically). Rhubarb, light peach / apricot / stone fruit, touch of VA.

Palate is the star: high acid + balance of sweetness. I had trouble finding RS g/L but it's noticeable but not overly sweet compared to other Kabi's, so would put it between 15-30 g/L.

12 eu retail / $22 - $29 US retail -- above average QPR for either of these locations despite price discrepancy.

2022 Dönnhoff Grauburgunder, Nahe 🇩🇪
@weingut.doennhoff

•°• 🍷•°•

Grauburgunder AKA Pinot Grigio. A grape that is seldom showy but very drinkable. It is known for having some phenolic bitterness. My first time trying a German style.

Some observations: it misses the copper hue sometimes found in other regions, and has some characteristic chalky / seaspray nose.

Austere but yummy to me thanks to being clean, lean, and crispy. Neither complex nor fruity, but so very clean and precise.

I get the impression Dönnhoff is relatively well-known in the US among German producers and I'm not sure how that happened 😛 I've been told by folks they are a must-visit. Nahe is also a bit of a change of pace from the ever popular Mosel.

•°• 📑•°•

Zesty lemon and seaspray nose, hints of floral and peach. Med- intensity.

Palate is a mix of sour and saline, textural, chalky mouthfeel, and superbly lean. Med acid, med finish. No nonsense and very little fruit in the mouth. Precise wine! 13.5% alc.

2014 Paul Cluver Seven Flags Chardonnay, Elgin 🇿🇦

•°•🍷•°•

Elgin is known as a cooler climate region. You can find some premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir there. Paul Cluver is one of the better known producers in the region.

Tasted a more recent vintage and was curious how their flagship Chardonnay does with age.

Overall it was good and holds up but I was hoping for more oomph and complexity. Feels like it might have peaked after 3 to 7 years and 10 years is pushing it.

•°• 📝•°•

Herbaceous and hint of grassiness on the nose, white flowers, wet concrete, and general lemon-citrus fruit. Some vanilla presence but subtle.

On palate a notable ripping acidity, tart and sour profile. Funnily reminds me of a 2014 Vasse Felix Chardonnay from Margaret River 🇦🇺
