a message for my grandfather
his doors were always open and I miss that

dear Gido

i miss you and think of you often these days
i kneel and pray for you
and hope that you’re in a better place than where i am

yesterday i looked upon London’s sky and felt that you were sensing me and my pain

dear Gido i long for the days when i’d pass by your house in El Zeitoun not far from my work in Heliopolis
when i was younger and before those darker days
and I’d buy your favourite gâteau and we’d laugh and you’d tell me all about Faten Hamama and those beautiful celebrities the ones who lived close by

they’d greet you
and Egypt was once warmer kinder and richer than it is now

Gido forgive me for not visiting your grave
it’s been too much too painful

remember me because who will pray for me but you
i need you now more than ever

your granddaughter

Hi, I’m Reem.

I’ve written a character-driven novel set between Mubarak’s Egypt and England.

I explore resilience, love, culture and identity. I finished it in summer 2025, and it’s since been copy-edited and typeset. Now it’s with an editor for proofreading.

It’s an exciting time as an independent author with a full time job. :)

Cover and blurb coming soon!

‘The Light in Her’ is inspired by true events.

I messed up Big Time but I have no regrets. None.

Life at 25 was exciting, fun and messy…

Two jobs. I worked and worked. Little rest. Slept for 3-4 hours a night.

Making mistakes is part of me.

The characters in my books are flawed, relatable and with authentic voices.

I’ve recently been feeling overwhelmed by London’s noise and just how busy life is in general.

I’m a peaceful person and don’t like too much noise and living here can be hard for me. Life brought me here and I’m in a place right now in my life where I can’t leave this city. It isn’t the right time at all and I wouldn’t be able to. One day I will and not because I hate it. London is one of my favourite places because it’s my home, and I was raised here but it’s no longer the London that I once knew.

This park is one I go to often and it’s peaceful for me and I’ve done a lot of my writing here too. Sitting on a park bench and writing is one of my favourite things at the moment.

I think as we get older home changes. Any thoughts? 🙂🌷

I thought I had nothing to lose. Young. Free. Selfish. I loved every minute.

When you are young sometimes you have this strange feeling that you’ll live forever. That’s how I felt.

I visited places some of my family until now haven’t seen. I didn’t want to see Egypt like a foreigner and I didn’t want to be an outsider. I wanted to see Egypt like a real Egyptian. I was stubborn, foolish, young, free and everything a 25 year old should be. But then life handed me a card that I didn’t want.

Follow to learn about my crazy and unexpected journey.

I’m going to tell you a story about the taxi driver I once met, and I’m going to call him Hajj H to protect his identity.

This man, this taxi driver, blew my mind.

He wasn’t the ‘typical’ Egyptian taxi driver because something happened that night at 10p.m. that not only shocked me but everyone I’ve ever shared this story with.

I was sitting in the back of the taxi, biting my bottom lip as I usually do (a habit when I’m nervous). It was dark, and we were driving through what looked like desert land to me at the time. I was on my way to a relative’s villa and was planning to stay the night there. It was dark, and I’m already very short sighted, even with my high-prescription contact lenses.

Anyway, I handed him a 20EGP note and walked into the villa, happy that I’d arrived safe and sound.

The next morning…

There was a knock at the door, and then I heard my relative call out, “Reem, there’s someone at the door asking for you!”

I wondered who could possibly be asking for me. Nobody knew I was staying at this villa, and I’d been away from Egypt for several months.

I’d just woken up with messy hair and a sleepy face. I walked slowly to the door and found the same man who had dropped me off that night before.

“Mademoiselle,” he said. “You paid me £20 English pounds. I only asked for 20EGP.”

What?!

I remember thinking: Talk about a man sent from the seventh heaven

He handed me the £20, and something inside me shook. I stood there, stunned, and then, with a confused look on my face, I said,

“No. Can we be friends instead? And can we exchange numbers so that whenever I need a ride in the middle of nowhere, I can call you?”

And so, our friendship began.

Eighteen years later, I still know him and call him whenever I’m in Cairo. He’s taken me to many places in Egypt, such as Alexandria.

If you enjoyed this story and would like to read more about my life between Egypt and England, including Hajj H and some of our adventures together, subscribe to my free monthly newsletter. I have plenty more stories to tell.

Being honest with my readers is important to me.

Breaking a cycle is hard.
Losing people is hard.

Being yourself however is easy.

Have you ever moved away from what people wanted you to be?

A quick update: I had hoped to share the cover and blurb by the end of June, but there have been some delays behind the scenes.

Thank you for your patience. I’ll share everything as soon as it’s confirmed.
