Baby white-faced capuchin (Cebus capucinus) with a dry leaf in its hands.

White-faced capuchins are among the most intelligent New World monkeys. Relative to their body size, they possess one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios in the Americas. This large encephalization quotient supports advanced problem-solving, memory, and social learning.

While observing these cute guys I had the impression, they always look sad - perhaps intelligence is not the way to happiness, or more likely I am not capable reading their expressions.

In the wild, capuchins engage in extractive foraging: prying insects from bark, cracking hard fruits, probing crevices. Some populations use stones to crack nuts. Others rub plant material or even millipedes onto their fur, likely for chemical defense against parasites. These behaviors are not purely instinctive; they are socially transmitted. Young individuals learn by observing adults, forming cultural traditions within troops.

This species is highly social. Groups often range from 10 to 30 individuals and maintain complex hierarchies. Cooperation, alliance formation, and long juvenile development all contribute to cognitive sophistication. Extended childhood — sometimes several years — allows time for learning.

Species (Costa Rica): Young mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata) — a tree-dwelling primate native to Central America, famous for its deep, resonating calls that can be heard over several kilometers. It inhabits tropical rainforests and dry forests, feeds primarily on leaves, fruits, and flowers, and spends most of its life in the canopy. Mantled howler monkeys play an important ecological role by dispersing seeds and helping maintain forest dynamics.

Rufous-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia tzacatl) in hover mode: a biological high-performance system 🧬

Wingbeat frequency: ~40–80 Hz → lift generated on BOTH downstroke and upstroke via a figure-8 wing motion
Heart rate: up to ~1000–1200 bpm → supports one of the highest metabolic rates in vertebrates
Muscle physiology: ~25–30% of body mass is flight muscle with dense mitochondria for rapid ATP turnover
Specialized tongue: bifurcated, elastic microtubes + capillary action = ultra-efficient nectar extraction
Energy metabolism: nectar sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose) are oxidized almost immediately to fuel hovering flight
Ecological role: precise flower–pollinator co-evolution, enabling targeted pollination during nectar foraging

In short: extreme aerodynamics, rapid oxidative metabolism, and evolutionary specialization packed into a 5-gram organism.

🐸 Red-eyed Tree Frog – Agalychnis callidryas
Family: Phyllomedusidae
Distribution: Southern Mexico through Central America (common in Costa Rica)
Habitat: Lowland tropical rainforest, near ponds and slow-moving water
Activity: Nocturnal, arboreal

Key Biological Features
	•	Aposematic flash coloration: Bright red eyes, orange toes, and blue/yellow flanks startle predators when the frog suddenly opens its eyes.
	•	Adhesive toe pads: Specialized epithelial cells and mucus secretion enable strong adhesion to smooth leaves.
	•	Vertical pupils: Adapted for nocturnal vision.
	•	Size: ~5–7 cm (females larger than males).

Reproduction
	•	Eggs are laid on leaves overhanging water.
	•	Upon hatching, tadpoles drop directly into the water below.
	•	Embryos can accelerate hatching in response to predator vibrations (phenotypic plasticity).

Diet
	•	Insects and other small arthropods.

Despite their vivid coloration, they are not toxic to humans. Their defense strategy relies primarily on camouflage and startle display rather than chemical defense.

🐍 Eyelash Palm Pitviper – Bothriechis schlegelii
Family: Viperidae
Distribution: Central America and northern South America (common in Costa Rica)
Habitat: Tropical rainforest, typically in low vegetation and shrubs
Activity: Nocturnal
Diet: Small mammals, birds, frogs, lizards
Venom: Hemotoxic (causes tissue damage, pain, medically significant)

This striking “golden morph” is a natural color variation. The characteristic “eyelashes” are enlarged supraocular scales above the eyes, likely aiding in camouflage and protection.

As a pit viper, it possesses heat-sensing loreal pits that allow detection of warm-blooded prey. It is an ambush predator, often tightly coiled on branches, striking with remarkable speed when prey approaches.

What a wonderful world it is the tiny macro world….. I tried to make a moss portrait, and there it is, the moss has two eyes! Do you agree, these eyes are stunning! And the lips are latest fashion style! Never seen anything comparable in such a little creature, which I don‘t know and cannot name. 💚 by @reerzi

This butterfly’s face perfectly captures that moment when you unlock your phone and the selfie cam is still on. Wide-eyed. Confused. Slightly betrayed.
Proboscis pointing like:
“WHO authorized this angle?”👀

He also 100% looks like he’s about to say:
“Bro… did you just try to eat a snack without sharing?”🌸🌸🌸
