I’ve been back from Zimbabwe for over two months now, and only just started editing photos. Why am I like this? 🙃 Consistency has always been an issue for me.

Anyway here’s one from the stunning Chilojo Cliffs. Not a great shot; seriously in need of a proper lens for safaris, wildlife, etc, because 28-75mm just doesn’t cut it for these environments.

The cliffs are part of the larger Gonarezhou National Park, more on that soon. ‘Gonarezhou’ translates to ‘Place of many elephants’ 🐘🐘🐘 taken in Gonarezhou National Park by @reevesgetsaround

ERAWAN NATIONAL PARK 🇹🇭

Erawan Falls in Kanchanaburi state is like a real-life water park.

The waterfalls are divided into 7 levels, each offering pristine blue-green water and some nibbly fish. The walks between each level become progressively harder as you climb; and I'm told many people quit around the 4th level, meaning the last 3 falls remain relatively crowd-free.

Or you can just do what I did and arrive super early on a weekday and have the whole place to yourself 💦 taken in Erawan Falls, Kanchanaburi, Thailand by @reevesgetsaround

A TEMPLE ABOVE THE CLOUDS

Trekking through Doi Inthanon National Park leads to an amazing view of the Twin Royal Pagodas.

Technically, they are known as Stupas, not temples, as they are not places of worship. However they may contain a religious relic, or hold some religious significance.

Just a few kilometers from the highest point in the country, the pair of ceremonial stupas were built to honour the King and Queens respective 60th birthdays. The stupas are surrounded by beautiful gardens; and at an elevation of around 2500m, you are quite literally walking above the clouds.

Definitely worth a look in your visit to Chiang Mai, and much quieter than Doi Suthep. taken in Doi Inthanon National Park by @reevesgetsaround

🇹🇭 This is the Tham Krasae Bridge. This stretch of railway clings to the cliffside at the end of the Burma Railway, looking out onto the Kwai River below. After riding the railway during the day, I found a driver to take me back there for blue hour - it did not disappoint 🌅 Check my Thailand highlights for more!

THE BURMA RAILWAY

The Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway, was the Japanese war effort to reach the Bay of Bengal by effectively cutting off the Malay Peninsula and reducing reliance on sea.

With the Japanese in command of more than 200,000 civilian labourers from around the continent; along with over 60,000 Allied POWs, work began in 1942.

Forced to work under the gaze of their captors in the blistering jungle heat; dehydration set in quick, exhaustion followed, malaria and infection spread without resistance. By the time malnutrition and starvation came around, for many, death must have felt a welcome relief. Despite this, there are many tales of song and camaraderie, in the face of unimaginable horror.

The construction claimed over 100,000 lives, the vast majority were indentured workers from India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, China and Indonesia - sadly, mostly of their stories have been lost and many of their graves remain undiscovered.

After the war, the railway fell into disrepair and was all but abandoned, aside from a 100km stretch in Kanchanaburi State. 111 Japanese officials were tried for their crimes, and 32 executed.

In Kanchanaburi, a small portion of the railway still can be ridden today. Most notably Bridge 277, better known as ‘The Bridge On The River Kwai’ (if you haven’t seen the film I highly recommend it)

The beautifully tended POW cemetery is nearby, and is a reminder that it is only by stroke of fortune that I come here today as just a tourist. 🌹

BANGKOK CHINATOWN 🇹🇭🇨🇳

Thailand is home to the largest and oldest, overseas Chinese community in the world, with most of the population living and working in Bangkok. So, as expected, the Chinatown area is quite amazing.

If you can do just one thing while in Bangkok (why would you?!), I would suggest taking a tuk-tuk into the heart of Bangkok’s bustling Chinatown by night, and take in the atmosphere. Literally thousands of vendors line the cluttered streets and narrow lanes, feeding hungry locals and tourists late into the night. Meals are so cheap you can afford to forage your way through multiple dishes and still have change for a tuk-tuk to bring your now-bloated carcass back home!

One thing I also love is that when it gets really busy, you may find yourself sat on a tiny two-person table, opposite a complete stranger. No common language to greet one another by, just a simple bow of the head and a mutual understanding that, sitting outside on a plastic garden chair, eating hot meat cooked over flames, with cold beer nearby, is absolutely bloody glorious!

The winner for me, has to be, my beloved…Crispy Pork 🐷 (see last slide 🤤)

I'm no fan of big cities. Before arriving in a capital city I have usually already planned my exit strategy in favor of small towns and villages. So why was Thailand's 10 million strong metropolis different? Well for one, it's the world's most visited city! Pre-pandemic statistics saw Bangkok beating out London, Paris and Dubai year-on-year for that Number 1 spot. So that had to be something, right? Admittedly, the allure is undeniable. The name 'Bangkok' alone conjures all kinds of images of the exotic. Bustling markets, temple-lined waterways, humidity, spas, chaotic urban planning, delicious dirt-cheap street food, shrines, opulent malls and reckless hedonism; all on offer. It's hard not to get swept up in the momentum. So as congested, overpopulated megacities go, Bangkok isn't half bad! And as you can see here, I even found a few peaceful corners to enjoy the calm.

It's been a sad couple of days as we lost my Grandad following a short illness. Seems ridiculous to feel shocked someone so old has died but when they reach 90, 95, 100 and finally 102, you begin to think they will go on forever. Aside from a steady physical decline resulting from a year of lockdown, he for the most part remained physically fit and mentally sharp right until the end.

Just to get a scale of his age, he remembers seeing @leedsunited play in 1922, the first 'talking' film in 1927, seeing King George V open the Civic Hall, the Hindenburg flying over Leeds in 1936, and perhaps most astounding of all, he was already in his 50s at the time of the Moon landings.

A timeless raconteur and showman; a Sunday night wasn't complete without the (many) stories from the war, his chance encounters with Film stars, tales from 30 years on the buses and his encyclopedic knowledge of the history of Leeds. Not to mention the impressions and randomly bursting into song.

We were truly spoiled to have had you around for so long. Miss you already.
