Carnival chalkware refers to inexpensive, molded plaster-of-Paris or gypsum figurines painted with oils, watercolors, or airbrushed finishes, widely awarded as games of chance and skill prizes at carnivals, circuses, and boardwalks from the 1920s through the 1960s.

Origins & Evolution

• 18th and 19th Century Roots: Chalkware began as an affordable “poor man’s porcelain” in the late 1700s and 19th century—particularly among Pennsylvania Dutch communities—imitating expensive imported Staffordshire.
• Peak Carnival Era (1930s–1940s): During the Great Depression and World War II, chalkware dominated carnival booths. as the premier trophy for winning games.
• Decline (1950s–1960s): Carrying heavy, fragile plaster statues fell out of favor as lighter, safer stuffed animals took over the carnival prize market. Production largely phased out by the 1960s, though chalkware continued to be used for mid-century home and souvenir decor. taken in FOUND Vintage & Antiques by @refabrestylerelove

What an amazing day for finding vintage at the Malverne Community Yard Sales! I spent three hours driving around town stopping at many houses but there were soooo many more I never got to! I loved searching for treasures and enjoyed meeting so many nice people. Some of these items will be coming with me to markets - others will find their way to my space @foundvintagestore!
