🇦🇺 Sydney, Australia — what an experience!

Grateful for the opportunity to take the field at the Asia Pacific Flag Football Tournament and officiate alongside some incredible officials from around the region. 🏈⚡️

Every tournament is another opportunity to learn, improve, build relationships, and keep pushing myself as an official. Traveling across the world because of this game is something I don’t take for granted.

Australia definitely delivered. Great competition, great people, and memories I’ll carry with me to the next assignment.

Another tournament in the books. Another country. Another step forward. 🌏🏈

Until next time, Australia . 🇦🇺🤙 by @refgrevers

What an incredible weekend.

To see the growth and potential of flag football to promote and inclusive and extremely enjoyable sport you only need to look at the activities that I was extremely blessed to be involved with over the weekend.

It started on Wednesday with an LA Rams flag gala day at a local school in Melbourne. Seeing the excitement on all the kids faces causing a whole bunch of organised chaos during their games was incredible.

Thursday was a walk to the Tennis Australia precinct to get our accreditations and a quick tour of where we will have some activities over the coming days. Thursday afternoon we helped to manage and supervise the Cross Code challenge with various professional sports people undertaking a variety of flag football related skills.

Friday was the NFL game in the morning, I watched it from the fan zone in the precinct. After the game, it was officiating an AUS v NZ flag showcase, with the women playing first and then the men. Starting the event off with an NZ haka just set the tone for an incredible night.

We then moved onto a Nike showcase, involving more Australian and New Zealand players as well as some top US players. The skill on show was incredible and a privilege to be involved with.

Saturday we officiated the Creator Cup involved about 15 content creators from all around Australia with AUS and NZ players helping to balance the teams.

An incredible experience to be able to participate in all of the events, with all of them having an exciting atmosphere showcasing the draw that flag football has.

A huge thanks to NFL Flag for the invite and the opportunity to partake in the events.

Can’t wait to see what other opportunities come up in the future and seeing this sport continue to grow. by @refgrevers

The final amazing country in this incredible trip around Asia, and the final "first time" visiting a country on this trip.

To be asked to come and deliver a training session to approx 50 people from all around India was a pretty humbling experience. We had people from 14 different states within India all travelling a variety of distances to come and learn about Flag Football. Some of the attendees spent over 2 days straight on a train just to get to the training session, which shows the dedication and thirst for knowledge that they have.

The weekend was broken up into around 4.5 - 5 hrs of classroom presentations and about 4 hrs of outside work, spread across two days.

I was welcomed to the country, and training session, with incredible hospitality, testament to the nature of Indians. It was humbling to be treated like a "celebrity" and for them to show their appreciation for me running the training.

My main focus of the trip is to pass on my knowledge and experience as well as my passion for officiating flag football. I was just looking forward to talking to people who are passionate about flag football. The way that I was treated exceeded all expectations and it was a humbling experience with how they all went out of their way to make me feel welcome.

From the very first minute of the opening presentation, you could see that all the attendees were engaged and taking the information onboard.

Once we got onto the field and ran through various drills and scenarios, seeing the smiles and enjoyment on the faces as they learnt skills while running through various drills made it all worthwhile.

Thanks to @affimedia and especially @himanshuswamirajasthani for the invitation to come and run the training session and to @ctuniversityofficial for hosting, I'll definitely need to come back. by @refgrevers

Another Country, another amazing experience.

This time it's visiting the incredible country of Kazakhstan. Officiating American Football, particularly flag football, has given me opportunities to travel to countries that I may not have otherwise been to. Kazakhstan would have to at the top of that list.

It's not a country you immediately think about visiting after having just been there, I can't recommend it enough. The scenery is amazing, from some glorious mountain ranges, to breathtaking canyons, and lakes that are located 2200m above sea level with some even higher than that, it truely is a remarkable country.

I was there for officiate their international tournament, the Alma Cup, which had 14 teams from 7 different countries, all playing for the love of the sport.

Before the tournament, I went up Shymbulak mountain, which apparently is the latest sky resort in central Asia. When it starts with a 20 minutes cable car ride to the first of 3 stations, you know it's a massive site. Going all the way up the top, the views are breathtaking and with a temperature difference of about 15 degress from bottom to top, it certainly gets cooler as you get higher.

The top of the mountain is 3000m above sea level with some pretty incredible views.

On the weekend, it was time to officiate the Alma Cup. It was another opportunity to work with relatively newer officials and pass on my experience and knowledge to them. The tournament was an exciting tournament with the women's final coming down to the very last play of the game to decide the winner. A pretty fitting way to finish up the weekend of games.

The tournament organisers arranged for some of us to go on a tour around the countryside near Almaty. Incredible scenery, as we went to 3 x canyons and a gorgeous lake high up in the mountains (2200m above sea level), which wasn't even the highest lake they have. An incredibly long day (4:00am wakeup, back home around 10:30pm) but extremely rewarding being able to take in the views and experience the scenery.
Being able to share the experience with @aniemharcuadrasal made it even better. by @refgrevers

What an amazing country.

Time to head off to the next part of my adventure, after having spent an incredible time in Mongolia.

I was presented with a gift where my name was spelt in traditional Mongolian script, an extremely humbling and thoughtful gift, which was greatly appreciated.

I was welcomed with both arms into the country and was looked after extremely well by the tournament organisers. It was a privilege to be asked to come and officiate their tournament and pass on my knowledge and experience to their local officials.

It started with a pre-tournament training session the night before I left Sydney. I was then able to attend two training sessions during the week to help their national team prepare for another tournament.

I was shown around Ulaanbaatar by one of the local players, who was extremely hospitable and gave me plenty of historical information about Mongolia.

We then had the tournament on the weekend. It was the first international tournament that they held and it was an honour to help officiate it. It was nice to be around people who are passionate about the sport and are playing it for the enjoyment. The tournament was played on the practise field that the Mongolian national soccer team uses.

The final was a tight and competitive affair, fitting for the way the tournament advanced over the weekend.

As there was a team from Kazahkstan participating, with some players making their first international trip, the Mongolians arranged a tour to the Chinggis (Genghis) Khan Statue and Turtle Rock for them which I was able to join.

What an incredible sight they both are, with their own historical significance to the Mongolian people. Driving around to those sites you see some amazing scenery.

All in all, an incredible experience and one I'll cherish for quite some time. Now it's time for the next stage of this adventure and another "first time visiting a country".

Thanks @tsedev.ts, @ubfo.mongolia and the @mafa.football for the opportunity to officiate your tournament. by @refgrevers

Australia v New Zealand will always be an intense rivalry, it doesn’t matter what sport it is. Add in the additional intensity of American Football and you have a game ready made for drama.

Boy, did we have that this weekend. Three extremely competitive games across the U16, U18 and Men’s levels certainly meant that as officials we had to be at our very best.

Being so close to a NZ haka performed with such passion is an experience not to be missed. All 3 were incredible.

It was an honour to be involved in the games across the weekend and seeing officials step up in capacities that they haven’t done before was an extremely proud part.

Finishing the weekend off with a Men’s game that had plenty of lead changes at the end and coming down to the last play, those are experiences that officials work to be part of and it was a privilege to be on the field for that game.

The hospitality from our friends across the ditch was amazing and I can’t wait until the next one. by @refgrevers

One more country to add to the "1st time visited" list. This time it's the Philippines.

Back in February, after a flag football tournament in Thailand, as we were waiting for our transfer to the airport, I was randomly talking to a player who was also getting the transfer. He ended up being one of the organisers for a tournament here in the Philippines who invited me to come and help officiate his tournament.

What a great opportunity that turned out to be. Spending this weekend 2hrs from Manila, in Clark, officiating a tournament was an incredible experience.

Dealing with the heat and humidity, starting the mornings at 7am with the temperature around 28 degress and 90% humidity and getting hotter from there certainly pushed us to our limits. Having to finish the games before 4pm, when the daily storm came through made for some interesting afternoons.

On Friday we had a co-ed tournament with some great skills shown by both males and females across the board and there were plenty of exciting games with the final being a great game.

We then had seperate male and female competitions over Saturday and Sunday. There were some incredibly close pool games with the quarter finals and semi finals increasing with intensity. In the case of the men's semi finals, they were also impacted by a torrential downpour for about 10-15 minutes.

There was a small number of international officials that were able to attend and we were each assigned a crew of local officials who we worked with over the weekend and were able to mentor.

We finished up with a cracker of a men's final, being a tightly contested game throughout and coming down to the last minute to decide the winner.

It was an amazing experience and with this tournament having it's own unique atmosphere, it has quickly become one of my favourite tournaments and one that I'm sure I'll come back to in the future. by @refgrevers
