Can God truly die?

Muslim apologists often point to the Crucifixion as a logical impossibility, claiming an immortal God cannot undergo death.

However, this argument rests on a flawed definition of death itself.

Eastern Orthodoxy clarifies that death is not the absolute annihilation of existence, but rather the separation of the human soul from the human body.

In the Incarnation, the eternal Son of God assumed a complete human nature, making Himself capable of experiencing this very separation.

This reality is confirmed by Christ Himself in Revelation 1:18, where He explicitly states, "I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore."

This divine declaration directly shatters the Quranic claim in Surah An-Nisa (4:157) that Jesus was never crucified or killed.

Because Jesus explicitly validated His own death and claimed divine identity, the Islamic narrative attempting to label Him a Muslim prophet completely falls apart.

How then does the Immortal taste death?

Through the Hypostatic Union, Jesus remains one single Divine Person possessing two distinct natures—fully divine and fully human.

When He suffered on the Cross, He did not die in His immutable divine essence, but truly experienced a human death according to the flesh.

As Saint John of Damascene explained, even when His holy soul was severed from His body, His divinity remained inseparably united to both in the grave and in Hades.

Christ invaded the realm of the dead not out of weakness, but as a cosmic victory to destroy corruption from within.

By entering the grave as the Source of Life, He flooded the darkness with uncreated light and trampled down death by death.
