There is a tendency to talk about culture like it lives in the past.

@vidabyesquire’s theme this year, Guardians of the Heritage, could’ve easily leaned nostalgic, but didn’t.

Instead, the culture was here and now, holding the past with reverence in one hand, and the present with celebration in the other. The costumes. The energy. Hours of non-stop wukking up with my close friends, people I met on this trip, and strangers who danced with us on the road like we’d always known each other. Playing with Vida felt like playing with family.

Heritage isn’t something you preserve behind glass. It’s something you keep alive by practicing it in the present tense.

The title of Large Band of the Year, Heritage 2026 was well deserved 🇧🇧🏆🍾
