POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When the Grenache Gris and the sunrise match 🍇🌅

Our vineyard crew is deep in harvest right now with back-to-back pre-dawn picks and little sleep in between. But moments like these keep the energy alive.

Send our team some love for all their hard work, and for an abundant, delicious harvest.

Recently, @nobleresearchinstitute brought their film crew to the ranch and spent time with Kelly, capturing “a day in the life” for a short film on regenerative winegrowing.

They happened to catch peak summer season when every corner of the ranch is bustling with life and movement, and our teams are BUSY.

For our vineyard crew, with harvest about to kick off, here is some of the day-to-day work they are immersed in:

🍇 Monitoring the fruit. In places where we don’t yet have bird netting up, we’re walking the rows and dropping damaged fruit, as well as the very green clusters that won’t ripen in time, so the vine concentrates its energy into the fruit that will.

📊 Sampling fruit, constantly. We check brix levels (the sugar content in the grapes) every week, sometimes several times a week. That number is one of the key ways we know when it’s time to pick.

🌱 Reading plant vigor. We’re paying close attention to the health and vigor of each vine right now, and marking the ones that tell us something—this will later on shape how we prune this winter and what we do next season. The vineyard is always teaching us what it needs.

🔧Training the young vines. Trellis wires are being strung and the next generation of plants are getting guided up the trellis stakes, so they are set up strong for the years ahead.

We can’t wait to see what harvest brings us this year! Thank you to Katie, Rob & Spencer at Noble Research Institute for capturing the magic of this season.

When Kelly Mulville designed our vineyard, he used a high trellis system…high enough for sheep to graze underneath year-round, high enough to create something closer to a vine forest than a conventional vineyard. One thing he’d been curious about: whether that clearance might eventually let harriers hunt the vineyard in both directions, flying between the trellised rows and coursing low underneath the canopy.

This spring, he got his answer. They’re flying it both ways.

Northern harriers hunt unlike any other hawk, just a few feet off the ground. A pair has nested just below the vineyard, and we see them daily, working the rows. That’s unusual. Harriers nest on the ground and are known to abandon sites when humans get too close. Something about this landscape feels safe enough for them to stay.

They’re not alone. White-tailed kites are now nesting next to the vineyard and Barn Owls occupy 16 owl boxes on the perimeter. Red-tailed hawks are here in abundance,

Nobody designed a raptor habitat. But a vineyard designed to allow nature to flourish — soil kept covered, 100+ plant species reseeding themselves, sheep grazing throughout the year, no tillage,— created the conditions for one. More plants, more insects, more ground cover, and eventually the raptors that follow.

First it was 3,000 endangered tri-colored blackbirds. Now at least 5 raptor species are regularly hunting and nesting in and around the vineyard.

What else shows up when you design for life instead of against it?

Sheep in vineyards have become a symbol of regenerative viticulture. But a flock in the vineyard should be a visible expression of a deeper, integrated systems design.

What happens when we stop managing practices and start managing processes? When we design for succession instead of control, and let living systems do what they evolved to do?

June 9 MINDSET Masterclass: Allowing Nature to Flourish — Lessons from Managing Holistically Led by Kelly Mulville (Paicines Ranch) and Jesse Smith (White Buffalo Land Trust)

Kelly built Paicines Ranch's polyculture vineyard from the ground up for year-round grazing — no tillage, no herbicides, soil carbon up 66%, biodiversity through the roof. Jesse leads land stewardship at White Buffalo Land Trust's 1,000-acre Jalama Canyon Ranch, where vineyards, orchards, livestock, and watershed restoration are managed as one holistic system.

In this interactive masterclass, they'll guide participants through the principles and decision-making that let natural systems self-organize — and the practical grazing planning that makes it work in a vineyard context. Expect dialogue across three lenses:

→ Ecology: soil health, biodiversity, ecosystem function
→ Community: relationships between land, people, and place
→ Economics: viable regenerative systems that reduce inputs and build long-term value

Holistic grazing is a powerful tool. This masterclass is about the proactive and adaptive mindset that maximizes the value of this practice within a larger process-based design.

“What if agriculture could be understood not as a source of environmental degradation, but as a force for ecosystem restoration? The presence of Tri-colored Blackbirds in the @paicinesranch vineyard is a small but tangible demonstration that this is possible.

Through careful design and management, farming systems can build soil health, increase biodiversity, improve water cycles, and enhance long-term productivity—outcomes that are good for the land and good for the bottom line.” - @regenerativewinegrowing

The stories from the land at Paicines Ranch are some of our team’s deepest inspiration for how and why we do our work at NoRegrets.

In this blog piece (originally written for MBA students of the Capital Commons Summit), vineyard director Kelly Mulville shares the story of why 3,000 endangered tri-colored blackbirds showed up in the vineyard one spring, and what it reveals about the true economics of farming with nature rather than against it.

“In a rapidly changing climate, vineyards that are more resilient and genuinely sustainable are in growing demand. Regenerative agriculture offers a possible answer: Through intelligent, evidence-based measures, it aims to create vineyards that are largely self-sustaining. Is this the viticulture of the future?”

We are honored to be featured in this beautiful piece, published by German magazine Falstaff, on the growing movement toward regenerative winegrowing, featuring our own Kelly Mulville and the work happening here at the Paicines Ranch Vineyard.

Our good friend @buglundgren of @ecdysis will be in conversation with our own @regenerativewinegrowing in this upcoming webinar hosted by @climatefarmschool (who we are excited to welcome back to the ranch this month!).

Register at 🔗 profile. Details below.

Join us for a special CFS Conversations panel discussion about moving agriculture education pedagogy to field-based and place-based learning experiences. Dr. Jonathan Lundgren of Ecdysis Foundation runs a nonprofit organization based in South Dakota, dedicated to advancing regenerative agriculture through relationship-based, independent research, most notably through the 1000 Farms Initiative. Kelly Mulville, Vineyard Director of Paicines Ranch, embodies holistic management in action, guiding all the practices on the ranch towards more perennial systems, more complexity, and more diversity. Both will share their perspectives on why we need to train emerging food systems leaders out in the field, engaged directly in the work of land stewardship, to accelerate regenerative food systems transformation.

This is an opportunity to get to know these amazing speakers, learn about their approaches to research and regenerative agroecological education, and hear their vision for more connection and integration across experiential learning on regenerative farms.

We invite you to join us, connect with the CFS community, and be part of these ongoing conversations! taken in Paicines Ranch by @regenerativewinegrowing

What you’re seeing here is not just a vineyard. It’s a living system.

At Paicines Ranch, vineyard manager Kelly Mulville reimagined what a vineyard could be by designing it as an ecosystem rather than a monoculture.

Tall vines allow light and airflow. A living understory supports biodiversity. Sheep are able to rotationally graze all year long, doing real work in the system. Soil health improves over time.

The result is a vineyard that requires fewer external inputs, produces high-quality grapes and animal protein, builds soil, supports ecological diversity, sequesters carbon, and remains economically viable.

This approach is not theoretical. It has been observed, tested, and refined over decades, and its outcomes are visible on the land.

This is one of the systems we study in the field during Climate Farm School’s Paicines Ranch course, now open for enrollment. It’s a rare opportunity to see regenerative systems in practice, to ask questions alongside the people stewarding them, and to feel the ecological value these designs create.

Join us in the fields 🐑🍷
