For decades, @kalustyans has carried those hard-to-find ingredients, and plenty of others that you didn’t even know you were looking for.

It’s not so much a temple to food as it is a mind-blowing bazaar of the aromatic, the rare and even the quotidian, like Heinz baked beans and Fox’s U-bet chocolate syrup. It’s a magical place.

One of my favorite burgers in the city is at @earinnbar. Pat La Frieda beef with a side salad and crispy home fries. Doesn’t get better.

I used to come to Russ with my pop for lox and bagels. I like to think it was usually on Saturday night, so we’d have the good stuff for breakfast on Sunday. So much of my life is invested in this little shop on the Lower East Side.

These days, @nikirussfederman co-owns the store with her first cousin, @jrtup. People come here, I come here, because it reminds us of our past, our history, our dreams. My order, which I implore you to try, is a lightly buttered toasted bialy with smoked sturgeon and smoked salmon.

For a couple of years now, I’ve been writing a column about the city for @tmagazine at The New York Times. It celebrates the iconic places that make this city, our city, so special.

This book is based on those columns and the restaurants, bars, shops and institutions near and dear to my heart.
