I met up with my dear old friend Marisol last night. We joined an acting class together at the 14th street Y.
Marisol and I met over 25 years ago in an acting class at HB Studios studying under the wonderful Michael Beckett.
We hit it off immediately, she a tough but very sweet Puerto Rican girl from The Bronx, and me a big mouth but shy Italian/Hungarian girl from Queens now living on The LES.
We did a play together at 292 Gallery, John Patrick Stanley’s Savage in Limbo. We were nemesis in the play and I told Marisol, “We are friends but I want you to know I’m going for your throat and I don’t pull any punches.” She shot back, “I’m going for your throat!” And then we both collapsed laughing.
We did the play and got a nice little review in an Irish paper and John Patrick Shanley congratulated us.
Now over 25 years later we sometimes would not see each other for years but we never let our bond fade. We are both grandmothers now and I remember when her kids were born!
Last night we stayed out hours after class for so long, (both of us drinking decaffeinated coffee at an IHOP) that Charlie called worried about that I was ok.
We were laughing and talking as we always did like 25 years never passed at all. by @regina.bartkoff

Charlie and I received a lovely gift in the mail today from the wonderful writer Davidson Garrett!
‘Miss Price & Me’.
It’s a coming-of-age memoir consisting of 18 narrative poems revealing how this white teenager grapples with his closeted sexual orientation, living in conservative, Shreveport, Louisiana, in the segregated 1950’s and 1950’s, finding his salvation through opera recordings, and from the voice of African American soprano, Leontyne Price, inspiring him to eventually move to NYC to pursue a career in the theater.

Miss Price & Me is available at Kelsay Books Bookstore or at Amazon.com

Davidson reads at our yearly show at 292 Gallery so it is a tradition by now to have him here and we are always honored! Besides his beautiful writing his skills as an actor really makes him a treat to hear!
Thank you Davidson for this! by @regina.bartkoff

I saw these posters up around the neighborhood and I knew I had to go. I’ve been reading about Leonard Peltier since I was a kid. I’m so glad I made it there!
Peltier’s paintings moved me very much. Most, if not all, are outdoor nature scenes. That is moving in itself because Peltier made them all in prison. I was looking at one in particular entitled, ‘Why have you forsaken me?’ A Native American on a horse with his arms flung out and his head to the heavens. There were people behind me and I just blurted out to who I thought were strangers, “This one really gets to me.” when it turned out to be our old friend Paul DeRienzo from WBAI with Reggie and Sharon. Paul told me Peltier was only let out about a year ago after serving 50 years.
What was really great was that I got to meet Peltier’s son, a real sweetheart and a gentle soul who told me his father is now 82 and his health is better and he’s doing ok!
They wouldn’t let anyone take photos but his paintings are simple and true as you can maybe see from the poster’s self portrait.
Paul was saying the eyes are all so well done, intense and beautiful. I agree.

Coming down Ave A heading to Tompkins Park I ran into the one and only Al Diaz and his beautiful wife Mariah getting ready to install a mural on the old Con-Ed building! I have to come back and see it when it’s done! by @regina.bartkoff

Sometimes I take early morning walks to Roosevelt Park. I like it there in the morning. Hardly anyone is out. Some Chinese are playing ping pong and others are doing Tai Chi with beautiful music. There are junkies and drunks just waking up, but they don’t bother anyone and that’s NYC for me. They all know me by now and say good morning.
I walk down different blocks, Ludlow, Eldridge, Orchard, Grand. This morning I was walking on Forsyth heading toward Hester. On Forsyth there is a big building painted a very bright lime green. I took pictures of Charlie in front of it. I wondered about it for years. What is this place? Sometimes there’s different things in the window like plants or boxes but nothing to give away what was inside.
It’s never opened.
Well this morning the door was opened a crack and I could smell some frankincense drifting out.
I stopped.
I read too many Nancy Drew books as a kid to not want to investigate.
Further Note: I had the hard cover Nancy Drew book series with those wonderful illustrations on the cover with titles like ‘The Hidden Staircase’ and Nancy Drew coming down those stairs with a flashlight in hand in the dark with a terrified look on her face. I think I wanted to be a painter when I saw those illustrations. Or a detective.
Anyway.
I cautiously pushed the door open a little more. There was a middle age woman sitting in a chair right by the door. I said, “I’m sorry to bother you but, what is this place?” She told me it was the home and studio of the sculptor Gail Goldsmith who is 92 now. I told her I was a painter. She said, “Do you want to take a look?” She didn’t have to ask me twice. These photos are some of her beautiful clay sculptures. I loved them right away. They are very warm and alive. Further down I could see her humble little bed but I already intruded enough and thanked the woman, Stephanie who was her caretaker.
I went home and Charlie looked up Gail Goldsmith. You can find her on the internet with her amazing story. Mornings like this make me remember why I still love NYC. by @regina.bartkoff
