Turning 60 is a hoot !
Oh so much fun !
How cool are our friends to go along with this at 11 pm !!
Many years ago we did this at a family party and the next day found out that no one pressed the play button ! So I’ve always wanted to do it again !

~ 2026 - What's Next?

2026 has been a bit of a watershed for this 31 year project as we shift from tinkering to manufacturing and commercialisation.

Soon we will be announcing a major development in this whole concept with a partnership with one of Australia’s most innovative and leading agricultural machinery designers and manufacturers.

~ 2026 - Regrarians Ripper Zappa MK1 ('RRR')

Thanks to Bob Barton (Landscape Architect and Director of @mala_studio ), Regrarians’ Darren J Doherty was introduced to Covalent Land Australia Managing Director Justin Glass. Our first conversation went directly to making agroforestry soil preparation less invasive, less herbicide dependent and lower in cost.

On the back of the developments with Earthbanc & Earthtree India in 2024, and building on the 2022 concept sketch, Darren designed (using QCAD) and fabricated (laser cutting by Online Laser & welding by Paul O’Keeffe of ‘@ampedupwelding ) an entirely new prototype—mounting the power harrow chassis directly onto a @tilco_official Hydramax ripper, so that in the event of hitting a rock, the Hydramax and the power harrow would be lifted out of harm’s way and then be re-inserted without stopping the tractor.

Justin introduced us to award-winning builder David Martin (@thesociableweaverhomes ) and Regrarians completed the farm plan of his 610ha Omeo farm, including its 400ha+ carbon agroforestry project that Covalent were managing.

We have been using this site as a test-bed for the use of the ‘RRR’ and it has worked really well except for a breakage of the driveshaft of the @orizzonti_srl power harrow assembly we brought from Italy. It served as a lesson to bulk up the shaft diameter and housing etc. for the commercialised model that is coming next thanks to a well-known Australian agricultural machinery manufacturer.

~ 2023 - Earthtree Ripper Zappa - Double

When we first started the planning of the procurements for Earthbanc’s Earthtree India project, we were told that 120HP John Deere tractors were available in India. Accordingly we ordered and shipped machinery from Australia and Italy and while en route, we then found that these tractors were for export only—so we had to settle for 75HP tractors instead.

Accordingly we had to use tractors which had much less rear 3PL lift capacity and suboptimal centre of gravity for these 2000+kg double Tilco Hydramax rippers + RCM hydraulic power harrows on a 200mm SHS toolbar.

So Regrarians’ Darren J Doherty designed a simple shear pin coupling for the Tilco shanks to mount onto a lighter 100mm SHS toolbar, while Earthbanc’s chief steel fabricator Eddy Kron designed and the team built a coupling to mount the power harrows onto the Tilco shanks.

This double row unit (and the single row) was used to prepare soil for the establishment of millions of Morus alba (white mulberry) across Meghalaya.

~ 2023 - Earthtree Ripper Zappa

In 2023 Regrarians' Darren J Doherty was asked to help Earthbanc establish over 6.8 million trees for the 'Regeneration Meghalaya' carbon agroforestry project in that beautiful state in the north east of India.

Among other elements of the workflow, Darren drew on his 2022 'Regrarians Ripper Rotor' concept design to design what he called the 'Ripper Zappa'. The ripper used were Tilco's XD Hydramax double-jump hydraulic reset units. While the 'Zappa' was RCM srl's (Italy) 'Zappatrice'—a single rotor Ø40cm hydraulic power harrow that are usually mounted on excavators.

With limited time available, we initially had to opt for RCM depth control—which we ultimately discarded as it was too heavy for the 75HP tractors available in India—opting instead for a new design (MK2) that Darren came up with where a simple 'U' shaped toolbar mounted the Zappa directly behind the ripper.

The ripper was also modified in that that the Tilco ripper shank was mounted into a shear pin coupling.

We also discarded the central hydraulic units as we found that the hydraulic motor (Danfoss BMP-160) of the power harrow could be run directly by the tractor remotes.

To date, 1000s of hectares of land have been prepared using these MK2 units, and the planting targets were achieved.

~ 2023 - Regrarians Ripper Toolbar (RRT)

In 2017 while designing variations of the 'Regrarians Ripper Seeder', Mechanical Engineer (& Regrarians’ REX Alumni) Luke Hallam and Regrarians’ Darren J Doherty developed a new toolbar to mount subsoiler rippers—with Luke formalising this CAD drawings in Solidworks.

In 2023 Darren modified this toolbar to accommodate the fitment of @Tilco_official XD #Hydramax hydraulic reset rippers—the world's strongest ripper of their type. The XD Hydramax double-jump mounts onto a 200mm SHS (square hollow section) beam, and so Darren swapped out the lower beam from a 100mm SHS to the 200mm section.

The Yeomans Plow Co. 'SB' toolbar we've been using for years is 797mm from front to back, while the RRT is 500mm. That 297mm difference improves the centre of gravity significantly—something that's really important when using smaller tractors and working on hill country.

We will be making cut plans available of this toolbar so keep an eye out.

Trees planted in prepared soil grow way faster than trees stuck in compacted corn/hay ground.

Strip tillage with a combination of a subsoiler and a tiller/harrow is where convergent evolution has landed in the U.S., Australia, and Switzerland/The EU.

A huge thanks to Bob and Darren (@regrarians) for advising and workshopping this over the years. We’ve built more implements than is reasonable, so you don’t have to.

Comment “Forest,” and I’ll send you the podcast.

If you own or manage 20 to 50+ acres of farmland in the eastern half of the United States, and you’d like allocate financial capital to planting trees for profit and conservation as a long-term asset on your land, just comment “Trees,” and we’ll be in touch. taken in Hudson, New York by @regrarians

~ 2022 - Regrarians Ripper Rotor - Concept

With the success of the Regrarians Ripper Seeder MK1, we no longer needed to work on that concept so our attention went back to improving soil preparation for woody plant establishment.

Regrarians’ Darren J. Doherty was inspired by his old friend and colleague Abe Collins’ ‘Vermont Rip Sower’, and its use of JM Shirk hydraulic rippers, while in this concept drawing he considered the use of hydraulic motors to power individual power harrows behind each shank. Like these non-inversion shanks, power harrows are also no-inversion in their action (unlike rotary hoes).

As before this concept speculated the addition of tanks for biofertilisers and microbial liquids, while also contemplating the ‘caravan’ concept of yore. This concept was drawn while the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions were still in place and so didn’t go any further—2023 would see that change…

The first time pigs go through a paddock, it looks like you've wrecked it.
Jason Hagan from McIvor Farm Foods on why that's exactly what should happen.
On ground that's never had pigs, they turn it over hard. Jason says it ends up looking like a big composted heap, and you'd swear you'd ruined the paddock.
But they're not being destructive. They're searching for minerals the grasses don't have.
Then the system kicks in. The disturbance opens the ground, seeds germinate, and better grasses come through. By the second, third and fourth pass, the pigs graze more and dig less, because they're finally getting the nutrients they need from the pasture itself.
The paddock improves. More grass, better grass, every rotation.
And the feed backs it up. A fully balanced mash of lupins, wheat and barley with the lysine and minerals in it, plus oregano as a herb. Non-GMO, no soy where they can avoid it. As clean as they can get it.
Trust the disturbance. Read the paddock over years, not weeks. 🌱
