waterloo street, birmingham.

this is birmingham’s gothic revival architecture at its most playful. the building combines red brick with pale terracotta, creating a striking contrast across its five storeys. look up to spot the pointed corner turret, intricate arched windows and decorative gables. the style is known as perpendicular gothic, inspired by the vertical lines and elaborate tracery of medieval english architecture. it’s a remarkable amount of craftsmanship for a commercial office building.

colmore row, birmingham.

after serving alliance assurance for decades, it later became home to birmingham’s tourist information office and a careers centre. following a new chapter as the restaurant and bar nosh & quaff, it became theatrix in 2019. today, its lively nightlife contrasts with the building’s original purpose, but the historic exterior remains a familiar part of the colmore row streetscape.

one of the most distinctive features of 130 colmore row is its domed corner tower, complete with a clock overlooking victoria square. the building is designed in the edwardian baroque style, using portland stone above a granite base. ornate stonework, decorative garlands and the curved corner help give it real presence on the street. it’s a brilliant example of how early 20th-century commercial buildings could be both practical and wonderfully grand.

newhall street, birmingham.

this isn’t your typical victorian office building. designed by frederick martin of martin & chamberlain, the grade-i listed structure combines red brick with elaborate terracotta detailing. towering buttresses, decorative turrets, ornate gables and an impressive arched entrance give it an almost fairytale appearance. the building wraps around the corner of newhall street and edmund street, making its architecture a spectacle from several different angles.

behind this elaborate victorian façade lies a surprising wartime connection. during the first world war, the building served as the midland headquarters of the air raid warning system. a place originally built to connect telephone calls had taken on a very different communications role, helping support the region’s wartime defences. it’s an extraordinary chapter in the story of a building that has witnessed more than a century of change.

completed in 1896, this striking victorian building was purpose-built for the bell edison telephone company and the national telephone company. it housed birmingham’s central telephone exchange, connecting callers long before mobile phones and the internet transformed how we communicate. it’s a remarkable reminder that this corner of the city once stood at the forefront of a technology that would change everyday life.

the story of this corner pub goes back much further than the building we see today. an earlier red lion stood here from around 1775 and became an unlikely gathering place for scientists visiting birmingham in 1839. some members of the british association for the advancement of science reportedly preferred the pub’s more relaxed atmosphere to the formality of the society’s official gatherings.

one of the most distinctive features of this victorian pub is the turret at its corner, topped by a conical roof and an elaborate weathervane. the building’s unusual design, described by historic england as being in a “vaguely loire” style, gives it an almost french appearance — quite different from the more familiar victorian pubs found elsewhere in birmingham.

this distinctive victorian pub dates from the late 19th century and was originally known as the red lion. the building we see today was created in purple brick and terracotta, giving it a very different appearance from many of birmingham’s more formal stone commercial buildings of the same period.

look above the entrance and you’ll find something even more unusual, a stone coat of arms flanked by two figures representing arts and industry. carved by samuel francis lynn, the female figure represents the arts, while the male figure represents industry, holding tools associated with his trade. the sculpture predates birmingham becoming a city in 1889, making it a fascinating snapshot of the city’s identity at the time.
