‘Dark Matter’ (detail, 120 x 100 cm, patina and marble dust on copper) is now on show at 📍 Hypha x Eastern City Studios, 130 Fenchurch Street, London EC3M 5LY Beneath the Rift curated by Divyam Raghunath @divyamraghunath_ 💭 Beneath the Rift explores what emerges when the surface of the world begins to split. Every environment carries fractures, whether in the skin of a city, the fault lines of a community, or the quiet ruptures within soil and the self. Rather than treating cracks as damage to be repaired, the exhibition considers them as openings into parallel spaces of memory, vulnerability, transformation, and resistance. Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image, and performance, the participating artists trace the unseen forces shaping contemporary life: migration, precarity, ecological change, distance, longing, and belonging. The works move between the personal and the collective, the physical and the psychological, revealing landscapes that exist both around us and beneath us. They do not attempt to seal the rift. #AnaMendieta @Tate Modern 15 July 2026 - 17 January 2027 I haven’t felt ecstatic like this about a show in a long time; it was almost difficult to breathe. We can feel so many different kinds of joy in our bodies; the spiritual one is rare and special. It occasionally pops up at exhibitions that resonate strongly on every level of existence. One of the first books I’ve ever seen and adored, ‘Tales from the Island of Orchids’ is a collection of mythological stories from Cuba. A gem that made its way to Europe in the 70s as part of the cultural exchange within the Eastern Bloc. I have found the illustrations of Mária Želibská captivating, and the words, however dark, so true. Nothing of the glorified heroes of the Grimms rang this true. At age five, weirdly, I knew more about Cuban mythology than European fairy tales. The book speaks of gods and goddesses, the Sun, the Earth, the Moon and the first human beings. The first man, Amao, brought to life by the Sun, and the first woman, Guanaroca, the daughter of the Moon. Murder. Child abuse. Drowning. Deception. Guilt. Jealousy. Neglect. Revenge. Also beauty, depth, belonging, love, grief and the balancing, grounding and healing force of nature. It has been a long time since I was last properly in the studio. The RCA degree show consumed the past weeks completely—an intense period with little room for contemplation. Preparing the work and the exhibition spaces, curating, installing, and navigating an endless stream of logistics and administration left almost no space for anything else. It’s strange to think that, during this time, I technically had three studios, yet none of them were truly available to work in. My original studio, the one I used before starting the course, is now two hours away and has become little more than storage until I can finally move out. The studio I’ll be moving into at @kindredstudiosartists is only an hour away, but I haven’t moved in yet. With just a month of the MA remaining, it didn’t make sense to transport all of my tools and materials there, only to move everything back again for the final stretch of the course. At the same time, our college studios had to be completely emptied to make way for the degree show. The only work I found both the space—and the mental capacity—to return to was this painting. I made it just before the course began and had been intending to revisit it for a long time, making a few small changes. Now, I think it’s finally finished. The Old Wild Place Beyond All Shame emerged from an early experience of profound intimacy with the natural world. It is rooted in the landscapes of the Drava River and its floodplains, where I first came to understand nature as something living and inseparable from my own existence. Water—at once generative and destructive, connective and divisive—remains central to my thinking. I approach it as a form of ancestral intelligence, carrying memory beyond the limits of human perception. Even my name, Réka, meaning “water,” speaks about this lineage. Introducing Réka Ritt Laklia (b. 1978) @rekaritt British-Hungarian artist based in London. Her work draws from an early, formative connection to the Drava River and its surrounding floodplains, where nature first revealed itself as animate, intelligent, and inseparable from the self. Water operates as both subject and framework within her practice, understood as a form of ancestral intelligence that carries memory across generations. Her paintings navigate the entanglement of nature and culture through folklore, non-dual philosophies, and mystical systems of thought. Memory becomes a site of inquiry, where personal narratives intersect with broader social patterns. The process unfolds as a ceremonial act, seeking to address fractures within individual and collective experience. Working on copper, she returns to the material language of her childhood, where making becomes a dialogue between inheritance and transformation. Oxidation, excavation, and layered surfaces give rise to fluid, hybrid forms that challenge patriarchal narratives and reflect the ecological tensions of contemporary life. Artwork list: 1. I’m delighted to take part in Where Silence Breaks presented alongside Where the Light Wanders this summer at Art Forward Gallery, London. Running from 11th June to 11th July, Where Silence Breaks features the work of Caroline Ashley @carolineashleystudio , Lesley Bunch @lesley.bunch , Sonja Kresojevic @sonjak18 , and Réka Ritt Laklia. Material, texture, and surface become central languages, with works that explore reflection, alchemy, repetition, and transformation. Across painting, textile, sculpture, and object-based practice, each artist creates work that holds tension between form and fragility, presence and absence. In parallel, Where the Light Wanders features Tereza Červeňová @tereza_cervenova , Mariam Menteshashvili @mariam__menteshashvili , and Charlotte C Mortensson @curate_ccebm , presenting photography as a site of movement and transformation. Across distinct practices, the artists engage with the relationship between figure and environment, tracing how identity is shaped through memory, place, and lived experience. Here, the photographic image becomes a shifting space — at once documentary and constructed, intimate and distant, grounded and transient. Across both exhibitions, a shared dialogue emerges — between image and object, light and silence, visibility and withdrawal.
