When you’re missing someone, finding the words for your child can feel hard.

This All Souls’ Day, you don’t need to have all the answers. A shared story, a favourite meal or a quiet moment together can be a place to begin.

There’s room for their feelings, and yours too.

Save this for a moment when the words feel difficult to find.

Halloween can bring costumes, unfamiliar faces, changing routines, loud voices and plenty of excitement.

Some children will want to visit every decorated house. Others might prefer dressing up at home, handing out treats or watching from a quieter distance. They might also enjoy the activity at first and then need to stop.

Before heading out, ask:

“What would make Halloween feel fun and safe for you?”

Agree on how your child can tell you they need a break. Keep younger children close, stay on footpaths, choose costumes that do not restrict vision and help children remain visible near roads.

Participation does not need to look the same for every child. A shorter or quieter celebration still counts.

Belonging is not an extra in childhood. It helps children understand who they are and where they fit.

Children’s Week begins this Saturday, 24 October. This year’s national theme reminds us that children have the right to use their own language, celebrate their culture and practise their religion.

Families can honour this right in ordinary, meaningful moments:

• Share a story, song or game in your family’s language.
• Cook a familiar meal and talk about its history.
• Invite your child to share which traditions matter to them.
• Make room for questions and their own way of participating.

Using a heritage language can strengthen family communication, cultural identity and a child’s sense of belonging. When adults respond to a child’s identity with curiosity and acceptance, we communicate something powerful:

You do not have to leave parts of yourself behind to belong here.

Today, ask your child: “What is something about our family, language, culture or beliefs that you would like us to celebrate more?” Then make time to listen.

⚽💚 Summer Series WEEK 1 | MICROROOS UPDATE 💚⚽

Coaches Kylie, Mackie, Luke, Philipa, Alberto, Adam, Ciaran, and Dave

Congratulations to all our Eagles on completing Week 1 of the @miniroos Kick Off program. 🦅💚
Today's session focused on dribbling the ball, with plenty of fun games and activities designed to help Eagles build confidence, explore new skills, and enjoy being part of the team. ⚽✨
It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm, curiosity, and teamwork as our young Eagles took to the field for the first time. Everyone embraced the opportunity to learn, connect, and have fun together.
A special thank you to @relationalminds for being our Week 1 sponsor and supporting opportunities for young people in our community to participate, grow, and thrive through football. 💚
A big thank you also to our volunteers, coaches, and families for helping create such a positive and welcoming environment for all our young Eagles.

"Will this change who my child is."

Our team hears this from parents more than almost any other question before starting medication.

No medication treats the core features of autism. What medication can do is turn down a symptom that is getting in the way, enough that a child has room to develop and a family has room to breathe.

If a difference is not impairing your child's life, it does not need treating. It needs understanding.

The full talk covers what the evidence supports, where it runs out, and the questions worth asking before anyone writes a script.

⚽ MINIROOS KICK OFF STARTS NEXT SUNDAY 🦅

The countdown is on. The Woodend Eagles Soccer Club’s @MiniRoos Kick Off Summer Series starts next week, and we can’t wait to welcome our returning players and new faces to The Nest 💚🖤

📅 Sunday 18 October 2026
⏰ 9:30am – 10:30am
📍 Buffalo Oval, Forest Street, Woodend
⚽ For children aged 4–11 years

A huge thank you to our Week 1 Sponsor, @relationalminds, for supporting our MiniRoos program and helping local children get active, build confidence and enjoy the beautiful game.

A few things to remember for Week 1:

👟 Wear runners, not soccer boots. It’s cricket season, and we need to look after the playing surface.
💧 Bring a drink bottle to stay hydrated.
☀️ Apply sunscreen before arriving.
👕 Wear comfortable sports clothing suitable for Woodend’s unpredictable weather.

Our MiniRoos program is about more than soccer. It’s about having fun, developing skills, building friendships and creating a welcoming environment where every child belongs, regardless of experience, ability or background.
Whether your child is trying soccer for the first time or already loves the game, there’s a place for them at the Woodend Eagles. We want every participant to feel welcome, included and encouraged to give things a go.
Parents and Carers are encouraged to get involved, too, and a coffee from Eagle One may help you enjoy your Sunday morning ☕

We look forward to kicking off the summer season together.

Eagles born to soar 🦅💚🖤

Saturday mornings can go from calm to chaos pretty quickly.

One minute they’re playing.
The next, you’re asking them to get dressed, turn the TV off, get in the car, or leave somewhere they’re enjoying.

And sometimes that change is the part they struggle with most.

A little warning can help.

“Five more minutes, then we’re going.”

It gives them a moment to finish what they’re doing and get ready for what comes next.

It will not stop every protest, and that is okay.

But sometimes giving a child a little time to shift can make the whole moment feel easier for everyone.

Sometimes your child is not looking at you for an answer.

They are looking at you to work out whether things are okay.

A new place. A hard goodbye. A loud moment. Something unexpected.

They check your face, your voice, your body.

Not because they are being difficult. Because they are trying to feel safe enough to keep going.

This is one of the quiet ways children borrow calm from us before they can hold more of it on their own.

You do not need to get it right every time.

But these small moments matter.

Safety and connection come first.

If phone conversations with your teenager keep blowing up, you're not alone. Most of these fights aren't really about the phone.

They're about worry on your side, independence on theirs, and how hard it is to hold a boundary when everyone is already tense.

This is where the two hands of parenting help. One hand holds the limit. The other stays connected to your teenager while you hold it.

Teenagers still need boundaries. They also need to feel that the relationship is safe while the boundary is in place, and that you're trying to understand what the phone is doing for them before the answer is simply to take it away.

The shift that tends to help is moving away from "how do I stop this" and towards holding both at once, the limit in one hand and the connection in the other. by @relationalminds

Some days you can understand exactly what your child needs.

Other days, you’re tired, they’re overwhelmed, and everyone ends up reacting.

Confident Parent isn’t about giving you another list of things you should be doing.

It’s about helping you understand what may be happening underneath your child’s behaviour, notice what happens in your own nervous system, and find ways to respond that support connection and regulation.

You don’t have to parent perfectly.
Sometimes it’s about having a better understanding of what’s happening in the hard moments — and knowing how to come back together afterwards.

Community Day with the @woodendeaglessc . @relationalminds is a proud sponsor, and we brought Jane from @passtheparcel along for the kids. Alberto ran a MiniRoos session and met a few new players trying it for the first time. Time alongside your child, doing something they enjoy. That is where a lot of the relationship gets built. by @relationalminds
