Feature Proposal: Localized Offline Post Cache (“HANG”)

Submitted By: Enehe Adinoyi Peter
Contact: enehepita@gmail.com
Region: Nigeria, Africa

1. Executive Summary

The "HANG" feature is a local user-experience (UX) optimization designed for regions with volatile, metered, or non-continuous mobile data connectivity. It allows users to instantly "freeze" and cache a specific post they are currently viewing when their data runs out. This ensures that after they minimize the app to purchase or reload data, they can return to the exact same post without losing their place in the feed.

2. The Problem Statement

Millions of users across emerging markets (such as Africa, parts of Asia, and Latin America) do not have access to unlimited data plans. Instead, they rely on small, metered data bundles that frequently run out mid-session.

When data exhausts while a user is mid-way through a compelling post or video:

The "Save" Feature Fails: The current "Save" button requires a server-side request. If the user is already out of data, clicking "Save" fails because the command cannot reach Instagram's servers (97% failure rate during data exhaustion).

The Feed Resets: Minimizing the app to buy more data or switch networks often triggers a background app refresh. When the user reopens Instagram, the feed reloads, and the previous post is permanently lost in the algorithmic scroll.

3. Proposed Solution: How "HANG" Works

Instead of relying on an active internet connection to save data to a cloud server, "HANG" operates entirely on local device storage (client-side caching).

User Action: When a user notices their data is stalling or exhausted, they tap and hold (long-press) on the active post. A "Hang Post" option pops up.

Technical Execution: Instagram immediately locks the post's asset ID and its current media state into the app's local device cache. It does not attempt to ping the server.

The Return Experience: The user minimizes the app, buys a new data bundle, and returns. Upon relaunching, Instagram recognizes a "Hung" post is active and bypasses the standard feed refresh, opening directly to the frozen post so the user can continue viewing seamlessly.

As you turn 60 years today Mum.......hmmmmm

I am happy for God's grace thus far in your life..........you are a strong Woman and I am more than Grateful to have been born through you into this World 🌍 as my Mother.......

Most of the time I feel I haven't done much for you and it's the reason I keep trying to, enduring every stage and phase of this life as it presents itself to me........I believe your prayers for me have been answered but God's divine time is the best........

I know God will give you the grace and strength to remain here with us longer in Good health of mind and Body.....Amen 🙏🏽

I am Peter .....your first and only Son........I love you forever and I will keep putting a smile on your face always........ your time will come........ with all conviction I believe it will........ Amen 🙏🏽
