CALLIDOTS 12 – Ⰱ • Exploring a 3x3 grid and color this time. Trying color seemed to be the logical consequence of my grayscale transition method from last time. I just colored the main ingredient of my setup and let that color change with time and depth simultaneously. As for the 3x3 grid, I have that option floating around since day one. It's just not as challenging as the 2x3 grid and many letters would have redundant dots. That's why I chose a glyph that really needs 3x3 dots. Some letters would benefit from that bigger grid. I could get rid of the diagonal lines and make the whole thing more uniform with a consistent set of rules. REMBRANDS 2.0 022/100 – CARHARTT – I walk down the streets and see logos and wonder how I would rembrand them. Here I initially tried to make an R/r in the style of the C logo and came up with like 40 versions. And then I sat there and saw that the result has nothing owl-like. Yes, I totally forgot that part. To my defense, during REMBRANDS 1.0 I often just wrote RemOwl in the original typeface/style and called it a night (as an owl) without any owl logo. But here, once I noticed the missed potential, I tapped into it and played with the C, aiming for that owl. As a result of a weird chain of circumstances I ended up with this 45° turned logo. I wasn't sure if it needed the beak in the end but without it, the implied beak would have been too wide. The word was the easiest part where I just frankensteined my name. This all actually took a while to do. I kind of struggle creating and posting lately as my focus lies elsewhere at the moment. But I really like this way of showing my Rembrands – transitioning from original to … owliginal hehehe So I gave every step and every ingredient its time, no rush. But then, how to edit all this into a reel? I don't have to make a reel – a mere result would suffice, right? Nah, I also enjoy telling a little music-supported story. I browse the music on here and imagine how it would fit the intention. I was looking for something calm but also sketchy (perhaps even scratchy) and unmusical. The beat at the end was a blessing. MULTIVERS LETTER X • Yep, I squeezed an X into a rectangular grid that doesn't allow centers. So this X doesn't have the most exy element – the crossing. It has four ends and it is symmetric – that has to suffice. As my first idea for X doesn't work (yet) I came up with this one. I am showing the minimal X, that has to be understood first, before all these variations appear. Whatever crazy things these variations contain, the basic shape remains intact. REMBRANDS 2.0 021/100 – KODAK – This is another K logo that makes a nice owl face >: after a little change. The "little" is important because after rembranding I still want to point at the original. That's also why not any logo is fit for a rembranding. I took the current Kodak logo and added those lines that were around in the middle 80's. They are probably too much from a designer's perspective but I find them charming. As for the REMOWL I found a similar font, made the O look like the original, applied a design to R similar to the original O and D (not perfect circles) and also made the M by flipping the W as a little parallell to KODAK having to K's. E and L were no-brainers. I added my little trademark ish logo and done! For the animation I added wire frames and the unrounded logo shapes. MULTIVERS LETTER W • I had the idea for this when I made T(t) "What about doing this in color?" so I took me C, M and Y pens and an extra R, G and B for the overlaps. REMBRANDS 2.0 020/100 – APHEX TWIN – I took the original logo, mirrored it and changed the proportions so it looks more like an R. Now it looks more like an R than the original logo looks like an A hehe. For the name I took inspiration from the Syro album – the color also comes from there. This time I was in the mood to make an actual animation. For my previous reels I took snapshots during the design process. Here I was a sketching a few versions, then building and reshaping the logo for 3 or 4 more versions on the computer until I had it and parallelly building the ingredients for the animation – the circles, tangents, outlines and wire frames. MULTIVERS LETTER V • Neon green spray on some kind of tank in an abandoned hospital building. When I sprayed my first Multivers letter (R) I was looking at a few possible places and also saw dark ones. Much later I had the idea to spray in the dark to leave something that can only be discovered by a flashlight – like an explorer reward. I spiced that idea up by using blue light that makes neon green stick out really well – almost like UV light (which I didn't have). I mounted a blue flashlight onto a ceiling pipe. I found a cable to achieve that. CALLIDOTS 09 – DOTMORPH • I thought about other ways to show how the dots represent a letter. This animation is directly morphing between letters and dot letters. Line ends, corners and continuous lines as well as T-junctions can now directly be associated with small, medium and big dots. It's still not easy to decipher the dot letters but it may momentarily help understand how the dots letters work. And the cover image shows the middle position between normal letter and dot letter. This is my second @logoarchive style logo set from my Rembrands project! Swipe for the color version :) Now they should be easier to guess. This time I am showing geometric logos that I turned into owls. Some of them are just obvious while others are really subtle. For the picture of me I took a photo last time. Here I took a something that represents what I did to the famous brands' logos: something that I edited. This one was pretty tricky, as I used a 3d file of the mask to get a blank one which made adding my owl logo much much easier. Imagine cleaning up the original mask and keep all these holes. Ok, with AI it would be a piece of pie … but where it the fun in that? And I actually made that image before AI obeyed to what you wanted. As for the big logo, that's my minimal logo that shows "ro" for Rem Owl. Mirrored and with the voids filled it became my maximum logo. I like that even the "half" logo shows the owl – or I am totally biased. Maybe this panel also makes it into the fantastic and heavily growing collection by @logoarchive.now . Feathers crossed! MULTIVERS LETTER U • I was looking for a way to actually build a modular system for my modular letters in reality. The spinning wheels idea is inspired by @giusepperagazzini 's Face Wheels because they totally do what my letters do: combine similar elements to create many variations of one thing. There are four face wheels, and one in the middle. I needed eight wheels for my eight modules. It was clear pretty soon that I cannot place my wheels next to each other, so I came up with the idea to use transparent wheels, that could partially overlap. I tried a couple of layouts before I came to this pretty simple solution of two times four wheels. All in all these eight wheels can create over 2 billion module combinations. Or am I crazy … 16 × 16 ×16 × 16 × 14 × 14 × 14 × 14‽ Well anyway, not all of these combinations are useful to create letters. For the biggest wheels I could only fit 16 modules so they and the others leave enough space for the letter and don't overlap with it. The 16 modules have to contain horizontal end pieces, vertical end pieces, corner pieces and a space. Each piece type usually has about 10 variants – I had to shrink that down. So this is pretty limited actually but still very variable. I can't make that m from my reel with these wheels. Incorporating a wide letter would have exploded the frame of possibilities. I thought this might happen at the biginning of this project, which made me insist on using the small grid only for a long time. M would be n̄ then, just like Q is o̱. But an unknown letter shape PLUS the crazy module shapes are two levels of abstraction in one. Not ideal. So yeah, pretty well working wheels prototype!
