Sergeant Osher Simcha Barzilay, 19 years old, fell as she was protecting Nahal Oz base and Kibbutz from Hamas’s evil terrorists. Osher served as a Combat signaler and was at the command center while 90+ terrorists invaded her base and Nahal Oz kibbutz. Osher communicated with forces ordering them to help civilians first and the base later, called tanks and a helicopter to the scene and asked them to help civilians, took care of her injured friends around her, and operated the radio to help the soldiers reach their needed positions, all while calming her friends down and giving them her phone so they could talk to their parents and loved ones.

That terrible morning, as she talked to her family, she kept calming them down, telling them “I’m fine,” asking them not to tell her mom as to not worry her. At one point, the terrorists surrounded the command center and shot and threw grenades at it in order to get inside. And then set it on fire. While some escaped, Osher decided to stay in the room to save more lives!

Her name - Osher Simcha - translates in Hebrew to joy and happiness. There’s no name that can better describe who she was than that.

Osher brought an incredible amount of joy and happiness to anyone who was around her and died doing what she loved - helping people! May she rest in peace and happiness.

Osher was an excellent student with all A grades. She learned neurology for 4 years at the university while she was still in high school and volunteered as an EMT in the Magen David Adom organization since she was 14, with dreams of becoming a doctor. She had an incredible amount of friends, a lovely family including her parents and 5 siblings, and a wonderful boyfriend who she had been with for 4 years.

היום שמחת תורה.
היום שלוש שנים.
היום זה היום שבו החיים שלי השתנו.
היום זה היום שבו כולם ישמחו, ירקדו,
והיום זה גם היום שבו נפלו לנו השמיים
היום זו תהיה השיחה האחרונה שלנו.
היום זו תהיה ההודעה האחרונה שכתבת לי.
היום זו תהיה גם ההודעה האחרונה שבכלל לא ענית לי עליה
היום זה יהיה יום ארור שייזכר לדיראון עולם.
היום זה היום שבו הפכת לקדושה, כמו ספר התורה.
גיבורת מלכות שכולם מכירים, אוהבים וזוכרים.
היום זה היום שבו הפכת למלאכית ששומרת עלינו.
היום יהיה יום קשה מנשוא.

אתה מפחד לחזור?
גם לי יש פחד.
פחד שאולי בכלל לא חשבת עליו.
פחד שחוזר אליי כל יום מחדש.
פחד שהיא כלואה שם בחמ״ל, ולא יכולה לצאת, כי בחוץ רוצחים וחוטפים את החברות שלה ואת החיילים שרגע לפני עוד ישבה וצחקה איתם.
פחד שיש אזעקות, והבת שלי לא עונה.
פחד שעושים לה משהו.
פחד שהיא נעדרת כבר כמה ימים, ואף אחד לא מספר לי כלום.
פחד שהיא פצועה וזרוקה באיזה מקום, ואף אחד לא יודע איפה היא.
פחד שאולי היא חטופה.
ואחר כך הפחד הנורא מכולם:
שלא ימצאו אפילו את הגוף שלה.
זה פחד אמיתי.
פחד שדופקים לך בדלת.
פחד שלא תראי את הבת שלך יום אחד.
שבוע.
חודש.
שנה.
שלוש שנים.
זה הפחד שלי.
אז בבקשה, אל תדבר איתי על פחד.

בסרטון דמותה של אושר מסבירה למטופלים על מחלת הסכרת, ומעודדת אותם לבצע את הבדיקות הנדרשות. מי ייתן ונגיע למאות אלפי מטופלים שבזכות אושר הצליחו לגלות בזמן תסמינים מקדימים לסכרת ולמחלות אחרות.

אמא של אושר אומרת לנו שהיא שומעת את אושר בקולה, ורואה את הדמות שלה כרופאה, ולא מפסיקה לבכות.

Sgt. Oshar Simcha Barzilai, 19, was serving in the operations room at the Nahal Oz outpost on October 7

When the attack began, Oshar remained at her post, declaring a state of war and directing forces toward the communities and outposts under attack. Her actions helped save many lives.

Even as the battle intensified, Oshar refused to leave the operations room. She stayed because she felt responsible for those depending on her.

During the fighting, Oshar kept her own calls with her family to just a few seconds, then handed her phone to the other soldiers so they too could call their families and say goodbye.
