Many hours of silence. Many hours of prayer. Many hours of listening that tiny voice buried under the noise of the world. Many hours of praying. Praying with the heart, praying with the fingers…. by @remembering_the_unforgettable

There are indigo dyers who call themselves masters. At first, I found this quite colonial, a word rooted in power and extraction, which is the complete opposite of what a dyeing practice is. But I always wondered: who is the real master? The dyer, or the indigo vat?

After many years of being in relationship with indigo, returning to it again and again, I have my answer. To master something is to tame it and taming an indigo vat is simply impossible. But the vat doesn’t want to tame us either. It wants to stay in relationship. It wants to teach. And so neither the dyer nor the vat is the master but the indigo vat is most certainly the teacher.
Its teaching is profound, generous, and unhurried. It asks nothing but your full presence, and in return, it humbles you. Every single time.

I have learned more from the indigo vat than from any teacher. It does not care about your experience or your certainty. It will receive all of that and slowly, patiently, remind you that you are still a student. That there is always more to learn. More to surrender.

Sometimes I tell myself I’m buying books for my kids, when I know very well they’re for me.
It feels like a way of returning to something I didn’t have growing up or maybe something I didn’t even know I was missing or needed.
Lately, it’s been Blue: the history of a color, deep as the sea, and wide as the sky - by Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond.
I love everything about it 🥹.

An archive of colors gathered in passing
Each time I was thinking: this could live on cloth.
Color is never fixed: it migrates, fades, deepens, stains, remembers.
